Just get a used Boss GE-7 EQ pedal off of craigslist or ebay for around $60 or or so and alternate the sliders (do a forum search for exact slider positions). A Bo Bro IS a stock Boss GE-7 pedal with the sliders set this way and the knobs cut off and a couple of stickers put on then priced at around $240. There is no modification done to the circuit at all, plus with having the knobs still on you can tweak the sound a little. This is actually a very convincing dobro simulator. |

I agree with what Mike said. I purchased a Boss GE-7 off Ebay (w/ Analogman mod) and use it for praise & worship services on Sunday mornings. Works great. People in the congregation have told me it sounded realistic.
I've tried experimenting with various bars to include glass, Emmons, and BJS (Hughey). All sound OK. The glass slide is a heavy-duty shot glass found at a garage sale for about $2. The shot glass his is what I generally use since it's lighter in weight. I also like to use the glass slide with a distortion stomp box for a Gary Rosington (Lynyrd Skynyrd) stuff. Most all of the Southern Rock guys used GLASS slides--Duane Allman, Dicky Betts, Lee Roy Parnell, etc.
You may want to consider one of the Paloma bars too. I may get one of these sometime down the road. I tried one out at the Jamboree in Texas last March and it sounded pretty good...light in weight too. I Googled this topic once and found where someone was getting the best dobro sound with this bar.
Hope this helps. I'm sold on the Boss GE-7. This stomp box is built like a tank and seems to be the most cost-effective way to get a dobro sound. It sounds realistic (to my ears). Besides, as a steel player, you only end up using a dobro simulation for occassional songs anyway.

I am using a Danelectro 7 band EQ ($30). Sounds as good as the Bo-Bro ($250)I used to have. By the way, the Bo-Bro is actually a Boss GE-7 that the sliders were set and broken off, and a couple of cheap pieces of plastic applied, and the price boosted over 100%. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . Click here for a post on Dobro simulation settings from a previous thread some time ago. I use a more rounded football shape, but by all means experiment to find what suits you. BTW, this is one advantage to having EQ sliders, rather than a single preset.

I love the sound of glass slides too! The only reason I use a brass slide now is that sooner or later I would invariably drop the glass one and break it.
