I don't think you ever have to have played one at all to have an opinion on it.

Here, it must be a long, long time.

On another note, I'm either frightened or intrigued by Bill Moran's last-listed effect in his signature. Sounds booming.

Just owning a PSG brings you out of wimpy into realm of arrogance.
You have an obligation not to let the rest of us down by failing to voice an attitude as opposed to an ineffectual opinion. Smile

You can have one the first day...........but you will change it. You get one door open and there are forty behind it.

It doesn't matter - as soon as you express on someone even less qualified than you think you are will tell you you are wrong! Which I think might be the point you are making. A point well taken.

If one did not have an opinion on it, why on earth should one want to play one in the first place? Very Happy

As Malcolm Gladwell professes, it's not the years you work to achieve competency, it's the number of hours spent. His hypothesis is that it takes a minimum of 10,000 hours to achieve anything worthwhile and be competent.

Read his book....he makes sense on the subject.

So, say you practice 4 hours a day, every day, no days off. 2500 days=roughly 7 years.

You can have an opinion immediately. Whether or not others who are more knowledgeable and experienced than you will give any credence to your opinion most likely depends on your own knowledge and experience, and whether your opinion agrees with theirs, or not.

Two things we're all born with: opinions and ________ (you fill in the blank, but it rhymes with assrolls).

I held a lot of my own opinions early on, but decided against exercising them and instead spent more time listening to what others had to say. Mostly my opinions didn't hold much merit at the time. I feel differently about that now, however, and I stick to most of my own opinions about the instrument, players, etc.

Some of the responses seem to be addressing a question different than the one asked. I thought he was asking how long one has to play before they are allowed to have an opinion on the instrument.

If the question is more like how long does one have to play before they have any authoritative perspective or how long before someone has considerable relative expertise, etc., then "how long" seems like an invalid, or at least un-useful, measure.

Well, really the question is too vague, isn't it? I mean, how long does one have to play PSG in order "to have an opinion on it"? To have an opinion on what aspect of it? On how you like your own guitar? On whether your guitar is the "best" ever made? On whether you like the sound of PSG at all? On how hard it is to learn? On how it makes audiences feel? On how it fits into hip-hop music? On whether Jerry Garcia or Robert Randolph or Buddy Emmons is the greatest who ever lived? On the relative strengths and weaknesses of the changer design? etc. etc. etc.

It's pretty obvious that you're always entitled to your opinion at any point in time. Also, hopefully your opinions will mature and shift, as necessary, as you gain more experience and exposure.

Now, re-reading the original question, it sounds like Curt might have gotten his hand slapped by somebody who implied (or perhaps stated directly) the view that he didn't have enough experience to state his point of view. Perhaps his original post was posing a sarcastic, rhetorical question, in which case, it is duly noted and we can all go home now.

The question was a little tongue-in-cheek. But we're such a small community that it's hard for a newbie to participate without degrading the quailty of conversation on here. I've got plenty of opinions and bouncing ideas back and forth is a great way to learn.

There are opinions, and then there are opinions from people who are asked for their opinion. The latter do not need "YMMV" as a postscript.

As always,YMMV. Winking

When I want opinions on steel guitar, I listen up, because my own experience has been limited, but in all other topics of music I take most opinions here with a grain of salt.
