I have been dwelling on having an only 2 pedal steel for sometime for my own reasons, [mostly less movement]and the most efficient yet simple Co-ped.

Has anybody tried the 2 pedal thing. The E raise seems to be the problem to tackle.

They say Weldon Myrick could do more with one pedal than most of us can imagine, i cant see why i would need more than two! Razz

With only two pedals, I feel you'd probably be best off with just a standard E9th with the A&B pedals. Raising the E would seem superfluous if you're going for 2-pedal simplicity. (I play my 400 without the E raise.) Think intervals instead of triads, and the missing note won't bother you. Winking

I think Dan Lanois might only use two pedals, at least on one of his guitars, but then not too many players approach the instrument like he does. Listen to the great non-pedal players.....they don't need no stinking pedals. Less can be more.

I use only 2 pedals on my E-9 neck. Been that way for a lot of years (about 35 years). Mine are B A wrether than A B. Had as many as 4, but never a "C" pedal.

There is actually a lot that can be done with two pedals a lot of really great music can be made with two pedals which Im not against anybody wanting a lot of knee levers and pedals but I think its great that a lot of people like to see what they can do with simple setups.

Thanks fellows this is great stuff...

Donnie...That makes the most sense of it all. I will un-hook my C pedal rod tomorrow and see if i can live without it [I doubt it] but i'll have to if i want to have this primitive co-ped, i know i will become a better player with less toys and more fretboard.

4 Knee's jim, and 'No' vertical on this exsperiment.

Bob bowman...Thank you, Do you have the E raise a full tone anywhere in your co-ped for the minor chords? If not are you just picking 2 strings at a time then like donnie sayes?

Larry, with the "chromatic" strings in there for melodic effect, both the D# lever (G#m open) and A pedal (C#min open) give you all the minors you need. And the AB pedals along with strings 1&7 give you F#m

Larry,
Yessir, I have a lever that raises string 4 E to F# and it also lowers string 8 E to D#.

I think you'll find theres a bunch of us that have the E to F# raise on a knee lever (I think I'll go start a another thread). My C pedal has just hung there like an appendix for 30 years.

It looks like i'm settling on 2 pedals today...I'm raisng the 4th a whole tone and the 8th a half tone and of course using certain string groupings and as Donnie said; Sometimes only intervals, i got to have that 4th raise...

On the same levers...I also added the raise on my rear neck which is a 6 string Dobro... for the G string raise 1/2 on the same lever LKL and my D raise 1/2 step on my RKL...
Now i can run up and down the G tuning without those stinking slants Shocked On a Dobro and remain seated at 2 pedals for 2 functions!

My Sho-Bud Maverick has 2 pedals (A&B) and 1 knee lever (F). It's a challenge, but I've used it on my sister's CD and played two short concerts with it. You have to be willing to slant the bar as needed now and then.

I just got her all finished up, removed a lot of stuff and weight and put new white fretboard's on this afternoon...All i got to do now, is practice all week with this Pedal missing and raising the 4th on the knee, I got a gig on friday.

These 2 pedals will keep me busy for a lifetime, and my mind will be less cluttered and so will the undercarriage! Very Happy

Lets don't forget the great Ralph Mooney, even though he had a rack of pedals his most used was A&B
and a knee lever that rasied fourth (E) to F#. My long time friend Jim Florence copied that from him and that is how he started me. I went to the Emmons
but still miss that pedal so going to put it back on.
Jim could play a handfull of Steel but you would see him slip in a bar slant and not even know he did it.
Of course he was from the old school, May He Rest In Peace. J.R.

I think two pedals is a great idea. It forces you to do other things like slant and move the bar more. Wink Someone posted a video link of Jimmy Day with 1 pedal and 8 strings. Some of the most beautiful steel playing ever!

I've been thinking about a two pedal tuning lately also. I recently took my ZB S10 out with only two pedals and 3 knees on it. The only person that noticed was....the other steel player on the bill that was touring with a Nashville act. He played like he had 20 strings, 8 pedals and 5 knees, and he was gonna make sure they all got used! Laughing Good player for sure.

I've seen Bobby Black play bluegrass (Rocky Top) on 12 strings and no pedals. He KILLED it - in a good way!

Just my two cents.... Rolling Eyes
