Bill, being a long-time "moderate level" Deadhead (I had friends who were "severe" level), I enjoyed the article - thanks for the link. Needed an extra cup of coffee, it was pretty lengthy.
The guy is a good writer, quite a wordsmith. He's also younger than I am, and missed the Dead in the 1970's when they were really at their height as a live band (provided they found the groove - which as anyone with any knowledge of the band knows was not a given), so there were some things he wrote about I thought he was a little off base, but everyone has their own frame of reference.
A lot of it though, he was right on the money. He touches on some things that bring back memories. I've always despised the smell of patchouli oil, and I really didn't enjoy some of the "twirler" dancers slamming into me at Dead shows. But there were some beautiful hippie girls dancing around too!
At Winterland during the long space jams I would usually go out to the lobby and get a beer, and stand by the front door to get refreshed by the cool San Francisco air before heading back in after the boys came out of the jam and the song started sounding familiar again. _________________ Mark |

The long space jams are all I listen to...
There's a musicologist who's written an extensive analysis of one single Dark Star from 1972. (I consider the 72 to 74 Dark Stars to be their best efforts). This is a PDF file, the first four pages are tab of the famous Live/Dead Dark Star and the analysis starts on page 5:

You'll have to track down the 4/8/72 song yourself, it's some where in here:

be careful you don't get sucked under by the aftercurrents - them Deadheads 'r SCARY! |

The article was OK for the first few hundred pages, but then I started to nod off. Kinda like a Dead show... |
