Fair question and shows respect for the law, your not selling anything or profiting so i would have thought it not too risky, I think a response from Basil ( Henriques ) would be helpful here, haven't heard from him for a while tho, hope he's doin ok

Since I'm almost certain all of the steel players and quite possibly the other musicians on the recordings have all gone to that "Big Luau "in the sky,I can't get anyone's permission.I'll wait awhile and get a few more responses before I do.

What I've got is 56 cassette tapes, mostly Waikiki Reqcords tapes, all purchased between 1990 to 1996 from the old Woolworths on Kalakaua in Waikiki.for now I'll just put them in my computer so I can get them in my ITunes library, then we'll see what happens. The sound quality might not be very good as I'm just running a line from my cassette player headphone jack to the mic input on my laptop but you can still hear the steel guitar .

That is a very generous and noble thought, making your entire collection available to all forumites. Having worked in the music industry myself and now that my son makes a living from it as a composer, I have mixed feelings.

On the one hand, Hawaiian music being a "fringe" genre could gain in popularity with more exposure. So Basil Henriques' "educational purposes" arguments are valid.

However, free availability of proprietary recordings can equate to the recipients walking out of a music store without paying for an article. Paradoxically YouTube and other Internet sources get away with it, I am informed by some sources, for reasons of low quality. Also, some video and audio recordings permit five copyings (enforced by software).

Even though your recordings may fall into the "lower quality" bracket, best to not use the forum to distribute freely. You could, however, publicize or "talk story" favorite tunes with information on procurement (e.g., album number).

I suggest you come up with grass-skirt slide shows and put them on YouTube... YT pays BMI/ASCAP, is my understanding.

Who would have thought that spreading a little Aloha could be so complicated?I'm sure there's more than one person on EBay selling the record he payed 25 cents for for 25 dollars. Is this a great country or what?

You can find some fine quality Traditional Hawaiian Music featured on the JerryByrd=FanClub.com site within the Ray's CD's page.

It's available for purchase and is posted here for no other reason than exposure for educational purposes ONLY!

Hope you like it! Let us know.

It has that rich Rickenbacher Bakelite sound that no other g'tar can deliver.

Srsly, make a simple grass-skirt slide show of the Greatest Generation and make little videos with your MP3's to post to YouTube. This is the way to get it 'into the cloud' and saved/shared for posterity. Someone can walk you through this if needed... this would be a great community service. PM me if you still are having problems with this.

If Hawaiian music is "fringe",then Hawaiian Steel is that little piece of lint stuck on the end of the fringe.
