I'm starting to find a lot of uses for the 2nd string half-step lower, but I'm looking for some ideas for the whole-tone lower from D# to C#. Any suggestions for licks, scales, and chords would be appreciated.

On a related topic, are there many people who have the 2nd string half-step and whole-stop lowers on separate levers as opposed to using a half-stop, other than John Hughey? I'm still pretty clumsy with the half-stop.

Here is a classic move: pick string 5 (A pedal down) and string 2 (full tone lower)together then slowly release both pedal and lever simultaneously. Next slide up two frets picking strings 2&5 open, no pedal or lever. Finally pick strings 4,5,&6 together, no pedals. Makes a nice opening lick (works very well in the tune, 'Sweet Dreams'). Note: playing strings 3,4,&5 open in place of 4,5,&6 makes for a nice ending lick as well.

Dylan, try this........

Key of G at the 3rd fret, Pick the strings in this order with the 2nd string lowered to a whole tone (two frets)..

5 2 4 1 3 1 4 2 3 1 4 2 5 either slow or fast

Next go to the 8th fret with the E's lowered and the 2nd string still lowered a whole tone, you're still in the key of G and pick the same strings in the same order........

Another move is to go to the 6th fret with the E's raised to F and the 2nd string still lowered to a whole tone and play the same strings in the same sequence.

Another move would still be in G if you only lowered your 2nd string a half instead of a whole tone and go the the 10th fret with the A & B pedals depressed and play the same strings in the same sequence again...

All of these positions sound nice on slow stuff but really shine on fast tunes using just the thumb and one finger, I usually alternate the picking between the thumb and middle finger. That way you can really throw these out at bluegrass tempos......JH in Va.

Here's a couple of moves I heard Paul play. L lowers a whole tone.

1--------------------------3-
2--5L/3-/4/3-------5L/4-/3---
3--5B/3B/4/3B----------------
4----------------------------
5----------------------------
6------------------5B/4B/3B---
