I know it may not sound like a ‘Big~Deal’, but; after the recent reversal in my approach to playing the PSG, I need to go on record if I expect to succeed in my new venture! My New Year’s Pledge is to spend a minimum of at least (1)-hr. per day, >every day<, practicing and dividing my time as needed between each neck. Hopefully, I’ll actually practice more than the minimum! [And I’m doing it without any ‘Formal’ instructional~material!]

Good luck big John! My resolution (only been playing steel about a year) is to be able to jam with my buds on steel in another year. I practice every day and had hoped I'd be ready in one year. takes longer than that to tame this beast. Happy New Year.

Good plan John. In my case, "the spirit is willing but....." I do try to practice more and play with more groups. Best of luck. |

After New Years Eve I only have one night a month that I play in Atlantic City. I quit everything else so hopefully I'll have more time to practice. |

John, I really need to discipline myself and try to practice at least once a week. I get involved into too many other things. Practice definitely keeps the chops in shape. And I usually run into some new ideas. |

I'm with you John! I took the first step and had a lesson with Mike Sweeney. I've already been able to notice the "new good habits" replacing some of the "old bad habits". I also think it is important to have a teacher that can get you working on the right stuff. So far, I've been practicing more, but more importantly, the right way. Sure was weird at first. I felt SO INCOMPETENT. Now I just feel incompetent. Let's see who keeps their Resolution. How could we start a thread to monitor who's keeping their resolution through the year? A little accountability never hurt. |

Big John, That's a good idea. Prior to my carpal tunnel surgery, about 5 minutes was max. Now I get to set down for 3 to 4 hours at a time to practice. Tim, If you have Mike Sweeney as a teacher, you've got the best. |

Good for you Big John. I try to practice every day two to three times a day for a half to one hour. I have been going out and sitting in with bands and that helps a lot.I plan on practicing as much as I posibley can. I'm not getting any younger and i want to be able to play the Steel right before I die.

I resolve to practice til I can play like Big John Bechtel. I try to play at least an hour a day. Most days it's a pleasure but there are days when it sounds so bad and I can't do anything right. That's when it's really hard.

Well, I did actually get the urge to try it last night and I spent a good hour and even learned something new! I’d like to try again today to help me get used to the Official Starting~Time on Sunday!

Someone suggested tracking progress on New~Year’s Resolutions, well; here goes again! I think I'm getting the swing of things, because; today I spent several hours practicing! I went over as many tunes that I used to play with my Reversed~Setup as I could think of and it took up several hours this time! I think by Sunday, I'll have the new habit pretty well formed! I'm already beginning to feel more familiar with everything being reversed and I think I'll eventually make it see things my way! There's no way that you can play every day and not learn something new, even if you don't realize it at the time!_ _ _ _ I want to take this special moment to thank b0b Lee for coordinating the Pedal Setup that I'm using on the C-Diatonic Tuning on one neck of this guitar! It's a whole new ballgame for me and it has given me the incentive to try to advance my playing abilities! Thanks, b0b!

OK Big John, I'm hanging with you on establishing a practice habit. Everyday, so far, for the past 2.5 weeks. And yes, reptition will make one better. I found that I can't retain but so much stuff at one time. So, I'm taking segments of songs and exercises and doing them over and over again. Once I start catching on to something new (even the exercises) it's fun. Day 1 officially begins tomorrow. |

My resolution is to play as many shows as possible and learn new things on steel. My next resolution is to find more songs to play at shows and not do the same songs at every show. My main resolution is to keep playing steel and never stop. Brett, Emmons S-10, Morrell lapsteel, GFI Ultra D-10 [This message was edited by Brett Day on 31 December 2005 at 01:08 PM.] |

I agree, Big John, sounds like a plan to keep up with!

Rick, I wondered about this too when I got my guitar last year--after a ten-year absence, how long it would take before I would play out?
Well, still practicing after 15 months and beginning to think that when I can play as well as the guitar (LDG) looks, I'll be ready![This message was edited by James Cann on 02 January 2006 at 06:57 AM.] [This message was edited by James Cann on 02 January 2006 at 06:58 AM.] |

I’ve been playing PSG since ’the mid-’50's, but; my main reason for starting a regular practice session is because with my new guitar I’ve reversed all my Pedals and Knee~Levers from what I’ve been playing all these years. Anyway, I just picked up my first gig in 6-yrs. for this coming Sat. evening! Now I’ll give it the real test, with a live band!
