Wonderful video of some great hula backed up by Barney on steel with Haunani Apoliona doing the vocals.
Stick around after the commercials to see Ledward Kaapana singing I Kona with Barney on steel with Chris Kamaka on bass. |

If I am correct, Barney was playing a CANOPUS D-8 (identical to mine) in this clip....seems they put black tape over the Canopus name ? So nice to see and hear the great Barney ! He was by far my favourite steel player. Hard to believe he has been gone for 16 years...(Feb.12,1996) |

Barney was a special guy with lotsa aloha.
While he was not my favorite player, he certainly was in the top five. I did enjoy his soft, sweet style of playing Hawaiian steel guitar.
Barney was prominent among steel guitar players in Hawaii and sought out, because he was asked to play the lead steel guitar for Hawaii Call with Webley Edwards. When Hawaii Calls was revived under Bill Bigelow in the early 1990's, Barney was asked to be the lead steel guitar player. Hawaii Calls radio programs were international broadcasts. The new revamped Hawaii Calls program had to be called "Sounds of Aloha," because of certain legalities regarding using the name, Hawaii Calls.
I asked Barney who his favorite steel guitar players were and who influenced him the most. He said. "Jules Ah See and his father Alvin Kaleolani Isaacs."
In viewing the video, Barney is playing a D-8 Canopus, which can be readily seen in the second number with Led Kaapana.
I will always remember him. Thanks for posting this clip.
Aloha,
Don

I'll never forget the first time I heard Barney,I had just moved to Hawaii from Fl. My first job was with a cleaning company and we cleaned all of the public areas at the Hilton Hawaiian Village 11 pm to 7 am .As you who have been to Waikiki know, most if not all of the hotels play Hawaiian Muzak in the elevators, lobby's,etc.so all night long I was treated to the best steel guitar playing ever.Barney with Kaipo Miller and his Happy Hawaiians,Jerry Byrd playing Sand and How'd You Do,Jules Ah See playing No Hu Hu.Needless to say I was in heaven. Then after work I'd grab my surf board, surf for a couple hours with all that music still in my head. Barney was truly Mr. Aloha _________________ I wanna go back to my little grass shack........ |

Top stuff. The Led and Barney number is a real treat. But chocolate coating a macadamia is a dubious attempt to gild the lily. _________________ Don't go in the water after lunch. You'll get a cramp and drown. - Mother. |

Great video! Good to see Barney with his Canopus steel. There's another video on Youtube with Barney playing his Canopus. A while back I found out that Barney's Canopus had the 24 1/2" scale length, but when I contacted Canopus, they said the 24 1/2" scale was no longer made, only 22 1/2" scale was available. |

But chocolate covered macadamias are one of my favorites! The wonderful hula is just a little port wine to go with it all. |

My only time in Hawaii and Waikiki was in July of 1990 for my neice's wedding, since she lived in Kaneohe. We all stayed at the Halekulani Hotel the entire weekend and Hiram Olsen had the band in the House Without A Key, with Kalani Fernandez on bass and Casey Olsen on steel.
Of course, nobody in the wedding party or guests paid any attention to the band except me, but I was entralled. Casey played Friday and Saturday, and Barney Isaacs played on Sunday. So cool! I sat alone staring at him play and on break he came over to my table and said "you look like a musician." I told him I was a steel player from Texas and was honored to have him at my family's wedding party. We talked the whole break and he took me over and showed me his Canopus, which I didn't feel was of the same caliber as a Stringmaster.
But what a treat to hear him for two hours up close and live, and have him talk to me on two breaks! Never to forget that one. _________________ My rig: Infinity and Telonics.
Son, we live in a world with walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with steel guitars. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinberg? |
