This is a pattern that should look familiar. I am constantly playing around with variations of this pattern. I think of it as climbing stairs. I use it both in fast and slow playing. I rarely, if ever, play the whole pattern as presented below. I find it works well to incorporate pieces of the pattern into my playing. I find it more challenging to go down the neck than to go up the neck. One should experiment with skipping steps, &/or reversing direction mid-stream.
It is played on the 5th, 6th and 7th strings of the E9 neck using just the B floor pedal, plus on one step (here the 7th fret) I add a knee lever that raises the 7th a 1/2 tone. If you don't have this knee lever I think the pattern is still good to learn. You can play the bulk of the pattern and just avoid that one string when at that fret. Plus many pieces of the pattern are very useful without going to that position in the pattern. We're in the key of G.
In this example of the pattern I play entirely with my two fingers; I don't use the thumb at all. The two fingers work as a unit and alternate between playing 5 & 6 and then 6 & 7. I am a palm blocker. I don't know whether pick blockers will find this difficult or not. It is certainly not required that you pick in this fashion. I use the pattern with many different right hand picking patterns.

Paul,
I think sdding the string lines (Shift _ ) would help to focus on where we are on the tab. My old eyes seem to "Wander" looking at this. With a name like "Paul" I know can do it.

Paul if you will email me, I'll send you the tab sheet I use. It's a MS Word file. I've used it for a long time and it's as simple as using a pencil and paper. Up loads to the forum just like you've already done. It's probably not the best but for my simple mind it works just fine. Easy to read, 12 pitch.
It would be my pleasure to send it to you. Or anyone for that matter, if they want it.

cool paul...i can read it fine the way you wrote it. now i just have to go over it a bunch.
paul showed me this lick yesterday but i was too slow to get it then. he plays it very fast by design! |

Paul that is a good one... I'll have to spend some time with it to get it up to speed.
I don't think I would like not having that 7th string raise. Very useful!
