There's a good article on Slate by pianist Jonathan Biss who writes, "Most of what I know about myself, I’ve learned from playing the work of Robert Schumann."

Thanks, I enjoyed reading that. I was impressed that the author indicates that at age 9 he was he was learning the pieces in Schumann's Kinderscenen ("Scenes from Childhood") at the rate of one per week. Though I couldn't play the pieces, at that age I was exposed to hearing so much of Schumann's music in my early years that most of his pieces might as well be called "Scenes from Childhood" as far as I am concerned, and I share the author's sense of connection with the emotional content of that music.

I can relate to this article, but not with the keen insight and experience of playing the music that the author has. I have strong connections with another composer (Debussy) whose music moves me and informs me in the way no other music has. But it is hard for me to see it as just music--it goes beyond that in such a way that it is almost sacred to me. It speaks to me about things greater than myself and my own emotions.
