Anyone own one? Ever try one with lap steel? How would you compare the sound to other amps?

Andy, I can only offer what I've read about these (and I researched them pretty thoroughly before settling on an Acoustic Image Clarus). They are fairly popular with the archtop crowd, and possibly for reasons that might make them unsuitable for what you're seeking. They are most often characterized as "dark", which seems to be terrific for archtop jazz, but seems counterintuitive for lap steel. The built in reverb also generally gets poor reviews. Like a lot of boutique amps, it's tough to find one nearby (although you're in Boston) to try out.

Another option is the new Quilter combo or head, which runs about the same price. I had the chance to try one out for an afternoon, and was very impressed with its sound and controls. The Quilter folks have a 30 day money back guarantee. Might be worth checking out, particularly the smaller speaker models that could be good/great for lap steel.
