In my Vegas 400, I determined that my voice coil may have been jamming up in the magnet so I took the magnet off and scrubbed the canyon in the magnet that the voice coil slips in and out of (using thin cardboard folded in half and air pressure)....Now the speaker has a high pitched squeal now and then only at certain higher frequencies,
Anybody got a clue of what may be happening ?
Is there a fix for this ? _________________ SO MANY LURES, SO LITTLE TIME.... |

How did you determine the coil was hanging up? Sounds like you may need a new speaker! Does it do the noise thing with another speaker? I've never had good luck working on the insides of a speaker... to clean that gap you really have to demagnetise and clean, then remagnetize... using double-stick tape can help sometimes. _________________ Too much junk to list... always getting more. |

About a year ago Brad Sarno told me about the foam that decomposes in the back of the magnet and fslls in the way of the coil and creates a sticking speaker so he taught me how to clean it out,
The same sticking sound started happening again a year later, so I did a premo job of cleaning the magnet and up pops a new noise, Kindof a wierd squeal now and then but no more sticky, always somethin new with old equipment,
Any way thats where I`m at

Question, do you ever have to revarnish the start of the windings of the voice coil ? Just a thought _________________ SO MANY LURES, SO LITTLE TIME.... |

Compressed air is probably not a good idea as you may force particles into areas where it shouldn't be.
Wrapping masking tape around a business card sticky side out should clean up any loose stuff in the gap. If you have deteriorated foam in the gap or on the windings it needs to come off too. Generally, alcohol or naphtha will remove the residue. You should not have to to anything else to the voice coil windings. Of course you have to be careful not to damage the coil during reassembly.
I have performed this procedure successfully dozens of times but never had the squealing condition, so I don't really know.
If you repeat the procedure and still have the issues, I would suspect you need to replace the basket. |

Jerry pretty much nailed it. Past that it requires a new speaker basket because this mechanical part needs replacing. Everything needs a little TLC after 25 years of use. :) |
