Hello all just got a prewar frypan and a few of the tuners are getting tougher to turn. What is the correct maintenance of the gear mechanisms? I was thinking about lubricating them with Tri Flow, a silicone based lubricant that breaks up without much residue. I use that on my pedal steels.
But I obvioulsy don't want to do anything that might possibly be detrimental. Any advice from you experts out there?

I'd say grease is the best for tuners... that's what the factory used. Obviously don't go overboard... put a little in a horse syringe and pack it in via the oil-hole... and run it with a stringwinder while you're doing it. _________________ New FB Page: Lap Steel Licks And Stuff: https://www.facebook.com/groups/195394851800329 |

Gary thanks very much that was a very informative article. I'm glad to hear Tri Flow is highly recomended it has worked extremely well for me in the past.
I am going to have to think carefully about this. I'm not sure if I qualify for the "100k mile overhaul" or not.
If so, it looks like lubricant may need to go under the gears which involves putting a screwdriver to the instrument. Not something I'm 100% comfortable with yet. I may just try a couple of drops of tri flow on the other spots mentioned and see what happens. Or ship it to some experts back on the mainland.
Either way great article!
