One thing to watch out for,Jack...if you get the tank too close to the chassis,it could cause hum...I had a a tech put one of my blackface Twins in a head only cabinet...the cabinet wasn't tall enough to get the tank away from the chassis, and was too noisy to use...I only use that amp in the studio,so it wasn't a problem...we just left the tank out.If you recall, the Fender Dual Showman and Bandmaster Reverb heads were tall and the tanks were farther away from the electronics... |

Do you have the original combo cabinet? You could just chop it then use an external speaker cab. |

Birch plywood works pretty good. Slightly less dimensional and bit lighter than pine ply. Solid 1X pine boards might be lighter still.
My 400 head cabinets are about 8 3/4" i.d. That is ample room for the tank. Keep in mind proximity to the amp transformer is the important thing. The tank will cause a bad hum if installed in the wrong direction.
I orient the tank in the head with the reverb control turned wide open and position it for the least amount of noise. Usually there will be just a hint of hum no matter what but should not prove objectionable.
Edit: I'm sorry, you stated NV500. I know they are different. The NV400 measures about 7 1/4" from the top of the chassis to the bottom of the transformer. That leaves less than 1" between the tranny and the tank, but it works fine. |

I can try to take some Monday. The layout of the boards in a 500 would make a compact head a challenge _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

It might be worth contacting Rick Johnson. I'm sure he has split cabs for this model amp before, and would likely be willing to share the dimensions he uses for this model when splitting them. He shared dimensions for a NV400 when I was thinking about making some. Since I knew his would look much better than any I would make, in the end I had him make them for me anyway.

I may not sound good, I just don't wanna sound bad. |

just wanted to mention that this amp is the shorter cabinet (the amp chassis comes out in one piece,) main concern is how light/thick of wood can be used to be stable. i would consider purchasing one already built....thanks jack (i am going to use an old nv400 cabinet for the speaker) |

Not sure if this helps but few years ago I used a cabinet from a peavy heritage 2-12 combo and chopped it down, the session head fit quite nicely in it and was able to keep the origional session cabinet intact |

In that case, my pics wouldn't help. So I won't bother _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

I was going to do the same thing ...then I sold it
