It's a Comet, and those cosmetic features place it anywhere from 1955 to 1967. The aluminum tag on the back of the headstock has the serial number, which can be dated here.

I have one of those, got it new as a 10 year old kid taking steel guitar lessons starting in 1964 in the Bay Area. Yikes, that was 48 years ago! Shocked

I just got a '57 a few weeks ago, same color as yours. What a great tone! I think you'll be very happy.

I have had one of these almost since I started playing...about 3 1/2 years. It is probably my favorite steel, and it is also my "travel" steel, as it is so light, yet sounds fantastic. I used it on every track of my CD...it cuts, it sings and they can be had for a pretty good price usually.

Received today, it's in great shape. From the serial# plate on the back it was made in 1961. Thanks for all your help! Will string it up in C6, what tunings do ya'll use on your Supro's?

Most Valco-built steel guitars are pretty good. Even the student models have good pickups.

It's interesting that Valco guitars and amps (Supro, Oahu, Airline, Silvertone, etc.) were considered student grade instruments when they were made in the '40s and 50s... but they are way better than the student grade gear made today. Kluson tuners, string-through pickup, hand wired, USA made... sounds pretty good in today's world.

I picked one of these up in a trade today. I'm thinking it might be a 1950 model (ser#V32328) and has a Stringtone tuning changer on it. It has a 1/4" plug and the cable goes thru the body and is attached to the vol pot. It was pretty cruddy so I've spent most of the afternoon cleaning it up. Just finished stringing it up and it works. One problem I've found is that 3 or 4 strings sound like a sitar this baffles me. I'm thinking it may be the nut. I had a Supro double neck around 1953 but didn't know anything about it then and even less now. I've got $100 in it and was hoping to make a profit. Any suggestions about the string distortion problem and how much one of these things might be worth would be greatly appreciated.

The Stringtone changer alone is probably worth $100. I've seen those sell for over $200 on eBay. It's hard to say how much your lap steel is worth without seeing a picture. The condition of the tuners and the electronics will affect the value.

I had a Dobro that developed a sitar sound after replacing the nut. I was able to fix it by narrowing the top the replacement nut.

Thanks for the input. Bill it was the nut. The stock nut looked like one of those things you put over the nut of a round neck to raise the strings. The string slots looked like someone whacked it with a chisle. I made another one out of 1/4" aluminum flatstock and it sounds fine. Doug I've been monkeying with this thing since Sunday. Put new strins on it and played around with the changer now it works great. Get 3 tunings A E&C#min. The pearloid has yellowed but is in good shape, the tuners are fine, don't slip and the knobs are like new. The top of the pickup is rusty(I'm going to see if I can find someone to re-chrome it). I don't know if I'll try to sell it after all, it's growing on me.
