Can anyone identify this vintage lap steel? I've never seen one quite like it. Maybe it was a custom build? It suggests Epiphone a little but I don't know of any old steels with a headstock like this.

Kahlmen steels were made in Elizabeth, NJ, most likely around the '40s. They turn up occasionally in NYC-area guitar shops. The few I've seen had a very home-spun quality to them, as if they were all one-offs built in someone's garage.
