Can anybody vouch for this auction being legit? I thought Jerry's guitar was in St. Louis with Scotty's Hall Of Fame collection. Also, the serial number is JB2. Wouldn't Jerry have had JB1? I though it was a one off custom job...

Anybody have any info here? Thanks.

Howdy All -

I have made no assertion that this is Jerry Byrd's original Sho-Bud made for him in the '60s and owned by Scotty (and yes indeed I have spoken with Scotty directly).

However, based on Bobbe Seymour's recollection of Jerry Byrd selling his spare Sho-Bud to a Japanese collector (most likely Isao Wada), corroborated with John Bechtel's account of stringing up Jerry's spare before it left the Sho-Bud factory in the 1970s, all signs point to this being said guitar. Add to that the JB2 serial number stamps and JB engraved endplates, the circumstantial evidence seems more likely than not.

Cheers,
Adam

You've put together a convincing story and have told it well.

I've noted on the g'tar Jerry played on that popular public television program........it appears that g'tar has the JERRY BYRD fret boards installed thereon.

Is that correct or not?

I'd feel more comfortable as a buyer if he would include more pictures. Razz

What a cool guitar, how many were made in this style?

the steel in question (JB2) has the standard SB decal on the front - there IS a very poor quality photo in JBs autobiography of him during his first japan trip in the late 70's (which lines up with the mfg year on JB2) playing a SB with what looks like the decal vs the plastic plate on JB1 (later the big decorative Jerry Byrd plate). i wouldnt hold my bets on something that minor, but....
i would WAG that he did have a second steel he kept in japan, possibly owned by a fan that he used when there. i'm sure photo evidence will surface someday.

the question would be - there are other known "Jerry Byrd model" steels SB built - how were they serialized? i know some members here have owned them. if they were NOT stamped with the JB# - then it points to further proof of this steels origin.

At some points, Jerry probably wanted to throw any one of his steels somewhere. Getting to be the best doesn't come easy.
