Anybody know about any old nice instruments that have 10 strings? I know there are some fine current builders making them. I was wondering if any vintage ones exist also. I love my '54 Fender Duo Pro and jump from neck to neck a lot to get what I want. Since my two necks are almost identically tuned, I could combine them with a single 10-strimng neck. Suggestions?

The only vintage one that I know of is the Eddie Alkrie(spelling ?)
He called it a Alkrieharp I think.
Saw a couple on eBay a couple of months ago from Hawaii.

Hey Jim,

Yes, they're called the Alkire E-harp. Here's one on eBay right now for 6 bills; probably won't find one much cheaper than that anyway...

Good luck, man.

Well, you could buy this one...a ZB (with tapped pickup) that's been converted. PM if interested (and a donation to SGF will be made if we do a deal).

Carco Clave has a Fender 10-string 'Deluxe'... he told me it was a prototype. I've thought about making one with pieces from a 1000. It looks more like a neck from a Stringmaster... extra long legs, like converted mic stands. Very hip guitar... He acted offended when I wanted a picture of it... without him! Sorry Carco!

A 10-string MSA SuperSlide is a sweet ride.

This one's on Austin CL right now, for $700... not MSA, but Melobar:

Not mine! You owe donation, not me, if you buy!

Jim; what style of music do you plan on using the 10 string for? A ten string is a great instrument but for most Hawaiian style music I find it a bit of an over kill. If you want to play mostly country with a 10 string, maybe consider a long scale (24 1/2" or a 25") like the older Remington models. I have one and it is effortless to make it sound like a pedal steel.

If you want to play modern jazz, country, pop and country, you should seriously consider having two steels. One a long scale 10 string along with a short scale lap.

Jim - I have an Eharp you're welcome to borrow to see if it's the right tool for the job.

Les, I'm doing Santo & Johnny-type stuff with a surf-ish band. I have a pedal steel which I use for a bunch of other styles. I'm leaning towards just moving from neck to neck on the Fender as needed. I have 2 necks, both a C6th tuning - one's got G on top, the other D. I was thinking I'd have both in one tuning with the 10-string. Chris, I might take you up on your generous offer. Can you e mail me your number?
