Ones of great knowledge of things electrical, here is my dilemma. I am trying to set up my "woodshed" and next to my iMac I have a 20 inch Mackie powered studio monitor. Anytime I move my mouse, or computer computes I get a scratchy noise in my speakers. I know the solution is separation, but do you think it is the monitor panel or the processor causing the problem? Would a combination of vertical and lateral separation be better than just lateral? I know just try it, but I would rather be playing music.[img][/img]

You want to separate your audio cables from the video and from the CPU case, the noise you are hearing may come from either, but it originates in the computer.

Could the preconus mixing panel be emitting EMI and being picked up by the Imac? No audio cables with an Imac.

So the iMac is connected to the mixer?

So the iMac is *not* connected to the mixer?

Some confusion here... let me guess, you have a mixer feeding a powered speaker, two channels of which come from the iMac. When you move the mouse you hear stuff through the speaker.

You should isolate things and see if the noise stops... i.e. unplug the input to the Mackie speaker, crank it all the way up, and see if you still hear stuff when mousing. If so, then the noise is getting into the Mackie via its power line... otherwise, it's coming in via the input. Now connect the Mackie back to the mixer board and unplug the iMac from it... with things cranked (somewhat) see if you still get mouse noise... if so, then the board is catching it and putting it into the speaker. Lastly, if no noise from all this, but the system together makes noise, then you're getting noise via the computer outputs, through the mixer, then to the speaker. My computer makes this kind of noise through my computer speakers when they're cranked up... the motherboard is the sound card, so obvious where that's coming from. The best computer sound systems have an outboard sound 'card' (really, a FireWire or USB module external to the machine) with its own power supply. You won't get pro results without this.

My Dell laptop did that and it was the power source.
Unhooked the charger and went away.
I tried everything and a Hum-X did the trick.
It was really bad through a PA sys.

I am pretty sure it is the PreSonus audiobox USB. But what do you expect for 150 bucks? Anyone have any suggestions?

you have a ground loop and you need to eliminate it. Currents from the digital circuit grounds are flowing into your audio signal path.

To eliminate it you need to start playing around with grounds. Start lifting things until the noise goes away. Not everything needs to be grounded on its own, because the signal cables are providing ground.

Keep safety in mind while experimenting

I found the problem, the culprit is my iphone. If I place it around a mixing panel or guitar pickup it makes all kinds of noise. I don't know if it is just mine or what, would be interesting to know if anybody else has seen this, or heck just try it and let me know.

My iPhone can cause problems intermittently - not as bad as a BlackBerry which radiated RF every time it checked the server for mail.
