One of my eight string necks is tuned to E13 with G# on the .010 first string. The output from this string is a lot weaker than the other seven strings, which are pretty well in balance.
I realize the .010 string doesn't have much mass to drive the pickup, but is there a pickup that would handle this situation? The steel currently has a pair of George L E-66's.
The other neck is tuned A6 with a .015 first string and the balance between strings is fine.
Thanks,
Gary,

Hey Gary,
An .010 seems a tad light to me. I've used a .0115 or .012 with good results.
Cheaper than a new pickup!

Howard -
I found a .012 and it sounds a lot better, I must say. From now on, you're my steel guitar guru!

I went to my steel this morning, and discovered that it had become a 7-string. The replacement .012 first string had snapped overnight.
I've got one more .012 so I'll try it again...

Is your high string made to be a G#? My lap steel (Chandler 6) never came to life until I bought the E13 strings from the forum. They are engineered to be the right note when at tension. My steel sounds so much better and it's quit breaking the high string.
If you're already using the correct strings, well, maybe it's somethng else. |

I don't know if you've seen this but check out this chart from the Hawaiian Steel Guitar Association:
http://www.hsga.org/strings.htm
Maybe you will find an answer there, they also have a great listing of open tunings and some good Hawaiian music to listen to by members who have shared. |

The string I've been using are the ones I bought from the Forum, with Scotty's name one them.
Anyway, the .011 sounds not quite as strong as the .012, but a lot better than the .010. And, it hasn't busted yet so I think I'll stay with the .011 for now.
Thanks,
