I am replacing the celluloid tuner buttons on a war era B6. I have taken the tuners off to do this task. When I did I noticed a few of the small bolts that thread into the bakelite to hold the individual tuners are a bit loose. I was going to try to treat the holes with something to make them fit a bit tighter. Would a few drops of thin superglue dropped into and spread around the threads a bit do the trick? Of course I would let the glue dry thoroughly before putting the bolts back in. Any ideas? |

Use the tip of a toothpick. Insert it into the hole with some superglue, let it dry, then redrill it (carefully!) to fit. _________________ Brad’s Page of Steel

Thanks Brad,
That is what I do with screws, but since this is a bolt I'm thinking the hole has to be threaded, not drilled. The bolts are just a little loose in the holes, nothing major, but I would like them to be tighter. |

Get some GE Silicon II ( pure silicon caulk) ... Black ... And dab it in the hole ...then put the screws back in ...
Yes, they were threaded ... But if they are stripped ... You have two choices ... Fill with something like Devcon Plastic Steel ... And redrill then tap ...
Or drop a little silicon in ... Replace the tuning machine and put that screw in ... And leave it be or a couple days ...
Wouldn't hurt to have alittle silicon under the tuning machine ...
I've done whole sets like that ... Strips to singles where the holes didn't line up ...
Holds like a charm ....
Don't underestimate the power of Silicon ... |

Thanks Rick,
That makes perfect sense! It is funny Silicon is the answer - I live in the southern Silicon Valley!
I am replacing the buttons tonight, so the tuners will go back on soon. |

How about just using some Lok=Tite? Doesn't have to be the strongest blend. |

Thanks John,
I thought of lockite also, but was not sure how it would react to the bakelite. I followed Rick's recommendation about the black silicon caulk, and put the tuners back on. It seems to be working, but it needs to set up a bit longer before I test them. |
