What we gonna do when we run out of metal?To make strings?!
The way things are going we will.Wood too.
Already the earth is raped.Always kept old string jus incase I need to melt em down and make a die to extrude and wind them,Ok I'm sounding rediculous.
Bought a Les Paul 15 yrs ago which was Brazilian mahogany body and Indonesian?neck,lighter shade etc.
Stoppage of forresting in Brazil,transition period I think..
Was it the Desert Rose steels that used the sunken lake logs of Canada?Which were hundreds of years old and best grain?slow grown etc.
You see where I'm going..
Won't need to worry about it in our life times I guess.

Time we conserved stuff,recycled.I live in a low populated part of UK with no recycling because the government decides it is too costly.Still got my old strings tho.Any way not wanting to do string folks outta business,buy more cos you never know when we might run out  Graham. |

I'm with you all the way laddie on the recycling..Our location, it is 'not' mandated by law, but our household does it and pays a very small fee which is very worth it, i can't stand plastic's going to mother earth, she has given us so much and we must tread gently upon her.
Mum said, in London somewhere now, they are recycling dead bodies to power a plant as they do the cremations. What a great idea!!
I think we need to worry about exterminating oil usage from mother earth first though, she will dry and crack, sucking out all the oil that nuture's her internals. It should be a while before our strings dry up!!
As far as instruments go...I think if we stopped making them today, there is enough surplus to go around in used markets for a very long time...
Do we all really need a New Steel or could we get by with a Used one??

Er umm.. You need to get over here to the states and have a look.. Run out of wood?. Not for a VERY long time... We may have to use new growth hardwood, and pine instead of mahogany, rosewood, or purpleheart, but we got LOTS of wood.. Also the fact that its still cheaper to extract iron from ore, than it is to recycle it, tells me we have a ways to go before we run out.... bob

| Graham, I think I remember that we did have a string shortage some years back; maybe more 'complete' minds will recall the details but it was something about one of our frequent wars needing barbed wire and one major company that made most of the wire...(was it The American Fence Company or something like that?)...and you forgot to mention water as a conserved resource...USA is 3/4 drought land now with 1/4 pretty severe...lucky for us we don't believe in 'climate change' or things could be a lot worse!! |

Buy a recycled Dobro,stop plugging your amps in for your pedal steel, and save the planet.

Ther'e not growing back as fast, that's why they worry about the Growth vs Usage...It's not healthy to think that we have 'plenty' of everything, plenty will run out eventually... Hopefully the EPA will help control our Oxie supply for us to breath and survive, as we have proven throughout mankind, money has no conscience!

Sorry, but with all due respect, that's simply not true. Smelting and reduction are far costlier than simply melting scrap metal.
In the area of trees, though, you are quite right on their abundance. There are far more trees in the U.S. today than there were 100 years ago. |

I don't think the E.P.A are trying to put a pinch on business's, but i know it's a tough topic, but i believe in good faith that they are trying make sure we keep our living rooms clean as so to speak....What i mean by that, is we are happy as the human race to poison water sometimes illegally, but we won't pour poison in our own cup...We make a mess in our yard, we clean it up, we make a mess in somebody else's yard we leave it [not everybody] ask most dog owner's!!

Heck, I am worried about running out of electrons. I should know this stuff. I went to prep school with Bill Gates and the Microsoft guys. I should know this. I was on the same classes. I thought energy was a constant. I thought the pluses balanced with the minuses and the electrons and the protons matched in the greater world but were only mismatched in specifics.aybe I did not pay enough attention in physics class. Our teacher, by the way, invented the application for Fizzies and the stuff that makes Alka Selzer go plop plop fizz fizz. Actually he made it go fizz. The advertising agency Olgivy Mather made it go fizz fizz do we would use two.
Are there an unlimited supply of electrons in the world? What happens when too many neutrons are converted? b0b needs to start a new Forum heading about this.

Anybody of the same age as me? The primo thing to do with Fizzies was to put the tablet directly in your mouth. Cool, man!
While I don't know anything about metal ore reserves in the planet, what with recycling of existing metal my suspicion is that we will render the planet uninhabitable by our species before we run out of usable metal. So no worries...uh, right? |

How much control do we really have over the earth, when the rising temperatures of the ocean are found to be attributed to ocean bottom volcanic spurts?
Remember when we were kids and were taught that the ocean was salty because of minerals carried down from mountain streams? Now we know it largely from undersea activity. Lots of gold and platinum down there too. Maybe that is where the missing 42 to 47 Bigsbys are too?

Well Guys Recycling is how I make my living. Been doing it for years. At one time we ran a junkyard but now we are in the recycling business. Go figure LOL

If this is a 'No go' topic i believe we have a Man that run's this place and calls the shots....If my opinion isen't welcome and what i have to say is 'Garbage' [if that was for me] then don't indulge in the topic of your dis-like, go 'click' on something else. It does Concern the world of Steel Guitars and wood and metal.

Marc, since I don't think anyone had suggested getting gummint involved, it sounds more like ethics than politics.
And since most here are capable of disagreement without getting disagreeable, I see no harm.
While I suppose the possibility of running out of aluminum exists, I don't think it possible to run out of iron: it's what the planet's core is made of.

Guys I promise we are not going to run out of any kind of metal. Some wood yes but not metals. We buy tons of all types of metal every day It's used over and over again. When cars are scraped they are recycled and all of the metal is saved and reused.
