Does any one know what tunings Mr Zinn primaraly uses on his stand up steel? What kind of steel does he play? I kinda thought it was an old Epiphone, Im probably wrong. Any way any info on Mr Zinn would be appreciated. Does anyone know his e-mail address? Thanks in advance

Aloha Norm,
I am looking at a sheet of LT's "Maui". He lists his C6 tuning as;
Top to Bottom
E
C
A
G
E
C
Bb
G
JohnEly's string chart will tell you what gauges to use.
Aloha,
PHIL

I saw him at a steel show about a year ago. He was playing a D8 Epiphone but I'm not sure what tunings he was using. Great player.

I got to meet and hear Mr. Zinn this past December at the DSSGA show in Gulfport, Mississippi and not only is he a great player but he is a fantastic person. I bought one of his books of tab titled Songs Of The Islands and on the front cover it reads 25 C6 Lap Steel Guitar Arrangements. I went through the book looking at the tuning that he used and it agrees with Phil Benders reply above. I wished that I would have asked him about his guitar he played that day but unfortunately I didn't.

Leonard T Zinn is probably the most inspirational person I've ever met. His playing is beautiful, he is always smiling, whether playing his steel or backing others on rhythm guitar. He's a real pleasure to visit with.

He does have "modern" pickups of some kind replacing the originals.

That's the deal with most old Epiphone steels. They're great guitars, just had lousy pickups. He was smart to replace them.

I remember Leonard from the 101 Ranch Boys days and when they were on the York Pa radio station. I've also seen them at live appearances in central Pa, including Valley View Park in Hellam (not far from York).

I've also played at Carl Zinn's Club 355 in Frederick Md. Carl is a relative.

Leonard also has a web page, where you can hear some of the old 101 Ranch Boys recordings..
That site is at......LTZINN.COM
A very nice page set up and maintained by Danny Hammers.
As of today, L T is 87 years old and will turn 88 in Dec...he just played a show in Richmond IN this weekend and is on his way back here now. He will be at the Steel Guitar Convention this Labor Day weekend.
There are three remaining Ranch boys....Smoky Roberts who lives in Lancaster PA and Rocky Ridel..who is now a pastor of a church near Lancaster. and L T..Smoky was an undersea cinema-photogher(sp) Many of his shoot's were shown on public TV. All really nice people today as they always were.
