I have a 1956 DW-16 Rick. console . Is it possible to remag the horseshoes by rubbing them against the powerful mags on a 15 in. speaker without taking everything off the guitar ?? Or would that ruin the horseshoes ?? Anybody have any thoughts ?? Thanks !! Eddie "C" = the old geezer

Rubbing the magnets against a speaker magnet might help if the magnets were almost dead. A better choice might be to check with an electric motor repair shop. Sometimes they have remagnatizing coils that they use on DC motors. Check Youtube for "making magnets".

I've remagged literally hundreds of horseshoes for folks on the forum ... Many because of some " home style" attempt .... Wink

To function properly ... The horseshoes must be magnetized along their "length ".

Rubbing the top flanges with a strong magnet will result in ... The top flange being magnetized through its " thickness".

The horseshoe magnets need to be removed ... And the bottom flange's front edge must make FULL contact with one Magnetizing pole ... And the upper flange's front edge must make FULL contact with the opposite Magnetizing pole.

That way , a magnetic circuit is created ... In which the Magnetizing lines of force run through the horseshoe ... Magnetizing it along it's length.

An electromagnet with adjustable poles is ideal ...

I'll be glad to remag them for free ... Just return postage and maybe a token sent to b0b ...

There are instructions on how to remove the horseshoes without disturbing the wiring on my website ... Scroll down.

Thanks guys !! My Rick sounds good now and I don't think I want to fool around with taking things all apart. It's my only steel and as I do some playing out I can't go without her for any time. I think I'll just be happy like it is and leave well enough alone!! Thanks again !! Eddie "C" = the old geezer

Well eddie, the general consensus here on the SGF is that the pickup has NO signoficance when it comes to tonal characteristics.. Its all in the body, bridge, neck. materials, etc, and nowhere else.. So you can stick in any pickup from any source, and as long as it fits, your great old Ric will retain its wonderful sound completely... bob
