You have probably all heard it before, but I have not been playing PSG very long. Well last night I started listening to Buddy Emmons in earnest. The man is incredible. Brought tears to my eyes. Now I know what you all have been saying. I strongly suggest anybody who has never listened do do on you tube at minimum.

Hi, Niels, welcome to explorations that will make your ears happy for many years! While there are many "greats" of pedal steel who display wonderful tone, ideas, and artistry, Buddy decidedly deserves all of the endless accolades he's received. There's just so much to be inspired by- from his tuning and mechanical innovations to his astounding licks, and always delivered with a tone that touches the soul.
As many did, I started playing steel after hearing an Emmons track, and I'll be eternally grateful!
If you've never heard it, please get yourself a copy of the "Live at Scotty's Convention '77" CD or album(s). Buddy at the top of his game with a top notch back-up band, amazing arrangements, in front of a few thousand adoring fans. I'll always be so glad I was at the edge of the stage for that one. I still go there for a listen whenever I need inspiration, or to show someone what a real master is capable of.

Buddy Emmons; The Worlds Foremost Steel Guitarist. Always was, always will be....the very definition of the word tone.
Dale; it would be the tone of today, its just that Buddy is the only one who can get it and he's apparently retired. If E was still recording and playing live, any paid player with a decent set of ears would still be busting their a$$es to get "it".
Then again, some of us never stopped trying to get "it".
Buddy set the standard, and whether they know it or choose to admit it, without Buddy, anyone who's ever earned a buck or two from the steel guitar would've been doing something else for a living... jmo, of course.
Neils: You couldnt have chosen a better player to listen to, literally. Try to find Roger Miller's album from '74: A Trip In The Country. I think you'll be pleased. |

Thank You all, it made for a most enjoyable weekend that I can continue to enjoy. For those interested if you use the Pandora App on your iPhone and enter Buddie Emmons you can get some great stuff with a lot of Jazz playing.

After hearing Buddy Emmons on Judy Collin's version of Leonard Cohen's "Bird on A Wire" (Who Knows Where the Time Goes, 1969), life as I knew it would never be the same. I had no concept of what a steel guitar was, and how it could make those sounds. I had to find out. Over forty years later, I am still obsessed.

Find the Emmons "Black Album". Just astonishing. Buddy Emmons is pedal steel. Sorta like what Bach is to classical music or Bird to bop. Besides his musicality the 2 most major brands of instruments where a product of his mind and effort. He is the "Bud" in Sho-Bud and the "Emmons" in Emmons.

Mike, I think my tone of today comment could possibly be taken wrong. I love this tone so much that I bought an Emmons P/P and a Fender twin. I look forward to every time I get to play. Like you said I can't get the tone I hear in that clip, But my spending spree was good for the economy.  |

BTW: If you want hear how Buddy sounds you should get away from low res internet files. Get an actual LP or CD. There is a big difference and its worth it when it comes to Buddy Emmons.

I will never forget the first time I heard someday soon
The steel was haunting to me. I loved the sound and had no idea who Buddy Emmons was. It was some 20 years later that I could afford to buy a pedal steel and try to learn to play it. I know that many pro players have made their contribution and have my utmost respect. I just want to say thanks for the memories,this song really made me aware of the steel guitar. Thank you Buddy |

I love Buddy's playing and adventurous nature. Some of my favorite playing of his has him doing things that no one has done before or since on steel guitar--one example that comes to mind is his performances of Pat Martino's "Mardi Gras" and also "Once Upon A Time In The West" with an Ebow at ISGC.
