Fellow Steel-ers, I am releasing a 6 string acoustic dobro album of some Gypsy Jazz music. I managed to pull together a pretty awesome band together for it...Grant Gordy (Dave Grisman Quintet), Josh Pinkham (Frank Vignola Band) and the Page Brothers from here in Asheville. I'd love to share a track for anyone who's interested in checking out! All the best, Billy

"The swing music Billy Cardine is tackling on the resophonic guitar on this project is some of my all time favorite music, and in his hands, the music itself takes on an all new meaning to me. It all sounds so natural to the resophonic guitar that one is almost forgiven for not realizing that this is pretty much impossible to pull off so convincingly. Billy is definitely a rising star in the resophonic world!"

(I get a little squeamish about self-promotion, but it's an independent release, so what can a guy do?!) |

Wow. That's impressive alright. It sounds like just plain old open G tuning, too. I'd go so far as to say that I prefer your approach to Rob Ickes.......when it comes to jazz anyway. _________________ Amor vincit omnia |

Hey thanks for taking the time to check this out guys.
Edward, yeah man, the Dobro is tuned to plain ol G on the whole record. One thing I really like about G is how neutral it is...it doesn't much suggest an aesthetic on it's own ya know. Just kind of a blank slate.
Hi Mark...thanks man... it's at www.SixStringSwing.com

The reason I had any doubt about it is that on the cuts I listened to, those wide open intervals that yell, "DOBRO!," were not in evidence. What I heard was very jazzy sounding. _________________ Amor vincit omnia |

Edward, I hear you man, i really wanted it to sound as natural as possible to the genre with as little 'trad' dobro stylings as possible, but still sounding natural unto the instrument itself. It took some thought and woodshedding for sure. Thanks for saying that, it makes me feel a little more like the exploration was worth it. And I appreciate your comment re: my jazz playing, though i gotta say if you prefer it to Rob's, it's still by Rob's virtue that I do it cause he used to give me lessons, and I really love his sound. I jumped in on the other thread (the C6 one) with a few more thoughts re: G tuning, etc.
Hey Nathan, thanks man, and I'll def be around there with NC americana-rockers Acoustic Syndicate later in the year. |
