After viewing & hearing some YouTube postings of the Buckaroos (the classic version), I realized how much I miss them. Tom & Don made that sound. Buck had a gold mine there. _________________ No-name lap steel and Beard Gold Tone reso in E6 and E7 |

Things started to shift considerably after Brumley left. Buck was already moving away from some of the forumlas that the Buckaroos had used for years. And you point out a big thing, we can't underestimate the chemistry that occurs between players that make up a unique unit. Doyle's vocal cuts were something that were special. "Abilene" comes to mind, from the incredible I Don't Care LP. Willy Cantu's drumming was unique as well. Buck had a thing for a while where it was kind of out there that he was the one who taught Rich how to play guitar, Don being a fiddler primarily before then. Don Rich had been playing six string since he was 5 years old, and while lots of those signature lick's were Buck's, Don had a style that was mean and twangy. Boy, did he and Brumley sound good together.

I miss them too, for all the same reasons. I think it will be a long, long time if ever, before that sound comes back around. At least it was recorded for posterity. |
