Curious to know around how many of these with Charlie Christian pickups are out there. Anyone. I have seen the lapsteel version, but so far, no consoles.

I would guess not many, especially in that configuration.

I've seen a number of 8 string laps and consoles with CCs, but that the first 6er that's I remember.

Say Ron......

just noted your latest post and based on one of your earlier unsolicited critiques of one of my posts that seemed to go on and on, I felt an obligation to comment.

You write: "....but that the first 6-er that's I remember."

I interpret your above writing as follows:
'but that(is) the first 6-er that(is) I remember."

Is that good grammar and good spelling????Just curious of course. This is purely for educational purposes, don't you know. Just don't be thin skinned, as no harm was intended. Looks like you sorta stepped in it, huh? Laughing

I too play a Console Grande albeit a D7/8 and I love it. I suspect that the reason that these guitars are so rare is that the OEM legs do not provide a stable platform and they tend to tip over and get damaged. I never use the legs on mine (except when taking photos).

By the way: there is a later and very different version of the Console Grande which lacks the so-called Charlie Christian style pickups but has 4 legs and is much more stable.

Loni; The D6 you have is a 1940 model. You can see another 18 pictures of a D6 configured Console Grande here; just scroll down to "Gibson_Console-Grande-D6-1940_01of18.jpg". Based on my observations the D6 version is the least common configuration of the Console Grande (for every year of production).

You can click on the image below to see the D7/8 I play.

Great thread and info! I so appreciate it. My handle is missing too.

My black D-7 pictured above. They look like CC pups,,,,, but the are quite different! adjustable polepieces! Different underneath too. I'vebeen thinking it may be a '39. BTW, only two long legs, with big aluminum "shoes"

Seems to have been a custom-ordered guitar. It's black, doesn't say Gibson anywhere, no, it's not cut down, and look at the size of the pearl block inlays! They're huge! Ebony boards too.

Also! I desperately need another 7-string bridge, so I can restore this lovely guitar! In the pickup pic, notice the crude lever sticking up? It's hooked to a one meg tone pot. Works great, but will be removed during restoration.
