I know we all hate to sell on Ebay but at times we do. I just found that Ebay charges 9% on your freight charge. Then if PayPal is used another 3.5% on the freight.
Everyone should bump the freight charges up 12.5% just to break even. It seems I loose money on freight every time I ship something anyway. You guys take a look at your Ebay statement !! Mad

Bill, Ebay and PayPal charges are just flat across your selling price including shipping charges. Wasn't always that way, but they got wise to all the people who were selling with low listing prices and a high shipping cost. There are other frustrations like a limit on shipping charges for books and videos that certainly won't cover shipping a heavy package across country, but it's kind of the only game in town.
If you're going the Ebay route, you just need to include all of your charges into your selling equation.

I don't really blame eBay for this, since so many sellers were selling $10 items with a well hidden $750 shipping charge (yes, this was common a while back). But eBay is continually shooting itself in the foot by non-regulation of it's sellers. A common problem is sellers who are "tagging" their sales so that they show up in many categories. A good example is that if you enter gibson amplifier in the search window, you are literally innundated with HUNDREDS of concert ticket sales ads. Whoa! (Evidently, they think that people interested in Gibson amplifiers are also avid concert attendees? Confused )

I used to be a regular shopper on eBay, but as their focus grew more and more obscured by whacky sellers, I turned to complex boolean searches on google to find what I was looking for in places other than eBay.

There is a Gibson Amphitheater... that's what's bringing up your extra search results. Part of doing eBay right is learning how to do complex searches.

Here's a decent one for Gibson amplifiers... I have a '61 tweed Falcon, so I maintain an interest in them:

gibson (amp, amplifier) -(case, maestro, jewel, shirt, PRINT, guitar, guiter, tix, TIX, TIXs, tickets, ticket, strap, capacitors, cover)

Note the many ways to denote 'tickets'... they will probably invent another, in which case you just add it to the '-' list in parenthesis. Kustom is even worse...

Evidently, they have a screwy algorithm for searches. Adding extra words should reduce the search hits. Enter "pedal steel", and it picks up pedal steels, but also pedal cars made of steel, and steel tractor pedals, and car accelerator pedals. Then, if you add the word "guitar" and make it "pedal steel guitar", it drops the car parts, tractor parts , and pedal cars. Adding "amplifier" behind Gibson, though, doesn't do anything to reduce the hits on the concert ticket scalpers. Evidently, their algorithm's only seeing the first 3 letters in "amplifier", and construing that to be analygous to "amphitheater". Oh Well

Thanks for the tip, though, Stephen. At least, I can probably use that to eliminate the 80-odd ads (by the same guy) for pedal steel covers under the heading "pedal steel guitar". Laughing

If you were searching for some pedal steel equipment to purchase, and do not like the "horrors" of ebay, I would suggest looking in the local Penny Saver ads, and the local newspaper classifieds and VG, and make up little handbills you can post at clubs, and shop in your local music store and pawn shop.

Ebay makes it pretty easy to find stuff. And you do not have to buy if you do not like the terms and you are in complete control over what you pay. Just figure out the add on charges before you bid. If you are a seller, you can control the net that you receive in the end. If you think setting a higher minimum will discourage buyers, think about what you would do if you had your item for sale in a store?

Ebay is convenient and it is whatever you want it to be. You have control, if you simply pay attention. Even trained chimps buy their bananas on ebay nowadays.

yes shipping even small items at the post office is very high these days way high rates
I dont trust ebay or pay pal and wont use either
I have gone to just doing local sales
unless its someone I know personaly
from the forum from past sales
I will no longer ship a guitar or amp
plus you dont know even if you get a bank check where is good or not so I never ship anything untill
they clear the bank
for me its cash only......IMHO

Ebay is a powerful medium and useful however one must be careful, I have used it much, years ago I had as many as 100 items listed at one time (Electronic Items), I'v had one loss, a guy took me for 75 bucks on a camcorder. Again, use it but protect yourself.
