Where can I find Wallace True Tone pickups? Are they as good as I keep hearing? Anything like the old Emmons tone? I have a Fess. 12 string.

I had one on a S-12 Carter that sounded great. I now have two on a Sho Bud Super Pro. They sound great too.

I have one on my Pro-II C6 and love it.

Just tell Jerry the kind of sound you want from your horn and he will recomend a pick-up for that sound.

I'm in the process of getting my '78 Sho-Bud fully restored. Jerry has rewound the original pick-up. . . .I can't wait to get it back and play it. Not only is it gonna look like brand new, it's gonna sound like brand new!

Just put one on my Carter S-10 originally had a George L: SS10, I like the true tone a lot better, although it has a slight hum now, that doesn't bother me.

I do too, and wasn't sure what was in it (never had a True Tone before).
Asked around here, and sure enough its a Wallace. Sounds great in this U12.

Well upon further review, I see that I had posted on this thread five years ago. I still think Jerry does great work on pickups.

My BMI has a truetone installed. I am very happy with the pickup; although I've only really compared it to a George L's humbucker, which is an entirely different animal.

My last CD was recorded with a Fessy U12 with TT at 17.5K and a push-pull U12 with Emmons single coils. If you care to, listen to a few tunes and tell me which is which.

http://www.larrybell.org/id42.htm
There are 1 min or so samples of all 16 tunes

In case you don't want to play the game, Razz
As a clue "Windy and Warm" IS the Fessy w/ the TrueTone

click here to play mp3 sample

Jerry Wallace is a great guy with a great product. That's a GREAT combination.

Pat,

Start with about 3-5mm between string and pickup and gradually reduce the spacing. Some say the thickness of a US$ 5-cent coin (a dime, I believe), is about right.

Test as you go until you get the response you like best. You may also find you need different spacing at either end of the p/up (i.e. under the 1st and 10th strings).

If you can't get the tone, try increasing the spacing as well. It's one of the several hundred different variables we struggle with in our journey of discovery on this infuriating, intoxicating, beguiling instrument.

I replaced the pickup on my 74 Emmons PP with a Wallace and have been very happy. The high end is smoother and the string seperation is better. I made the right move.

Thanks guy's,

sent an email to Jerry and got the mesurements, it is what Ned said...1/8" at the 1st string and about 3/16 at the 10th string.

Jerry's pickup sounds great, i work close to a desktop computer and don't get any buzz or noise whatsoever, the pickup is clean and good strings separation. Smile

A dime is 10 cents and the smallest, thinnest US coin. A nickel is 5 cents.

Thats roughly two 25 cent pieces (quarters) at the first string, and two quarters and dime at the 10th. Very Happy

Clete...i've never seen a 25 cent piece (quarter) 1/8" thick, i have 2 Canadian quarter here and it mesures a hair less than 1/8" Smile

i think what Ned meant is a dime or nickel difference from the first to the 10th string lower.

Woops! Embarassed

My bad, I meant two quarters, which is just a hair under an eighth of an inch.
Sorry Ned, I misunderstood your post. Corrected my earlier faux pas.
