I play a '54 Stringmaster and am looking for a small amp for my old-school western swing band. I love the Fender tweed look but am hoping for the $500 range.
My question is would there be enough headroom with a mod to a Blues Jr like this:

The stock Blues Jr. sounds great if you don't have to turn it up too far. If you can mic it into the PA you should be able to do most any gig, particularly if you can get it folded back into the monitors if the stage is a loud one.
If you need something a bit larger the Blues Deluxe Reissue is a fabulous guitar amp for practically any use. I bought mine new for $600 so you should be able to find a used one in your price range. |

I have been using a modified Fender Blues Junior for some time now and love it. It is a great sounding light weight amp. I have done many of the BillM mods myself and think that they are well worth the cost and effort. Before you buy this amp it would be good to know which of the BillM mods have been done. The basic tone mod, bias adjust and power supply stiffening mod make a huge difference, the amp really comes to life. There are many other mods that are worth considering as well. I have some experienece with these and would be happy to give you more info if you need it. Good luck.

I re-read your post and saw that you asked specifically about head room. The Blues Junior is a surprisingly loud amp for 15 watts. I play non-pedal steel in a small western swing / country band and in most cases it is just fine. I prefer to not run much through the monitors and usually don't have to. Occasionally I play with a loud drummer where the amp can't keep up on it's own. I really enjoyed working on this amp so recently I bought the parts from BillM Audio to make my Blues Junior capable of running 6V6 and 6L6 power tubes. I just finished the upgrades and have used the amp on only a few gigs but so far I am thrilled with the results. These mods boost the power to around 30 watts (with the 6L6's) and give the amp a lot more authority. A stronger bass and more guts over all. Still with the EL84's and 15 watts the Blues Junior is a great amp.
