For sale, a unique vintage square neck! Here is what I know for sure:
-Wood body square neck, looks like mahogany
-Single National cone, coverplate and biscuit
-Dearmond Gold Foil Moustache pickup bolted to the top!
-Three on a plate tuners
-The whole thing was oversprayed black!
The body is similar to the wood bodied Nationals from the 30's-40's. El Trovador, Havana, Trojan, etc... But the headstock is different from any I have seen. Maybe it was house branded and sold under another name: Regal, Kay, Gretsch, etc.... This is certainly a home custom situation, with the amateurish repairs, electric pickup, paint job.
The binding is white plastic and has been repaired and re-glued in various places. The jack area has been broken and non-pro repaired more than once but is tight. There is another crack on the side of the instrument that doesn't line up but is stable. The Dearmond pickup is grounded to the tailpiece, so it cuts the hum when your hand touches the strings/coverplate. This pickup goes for $100 by itself on ebay. The cone is good, but is sitting on some felt between the cone and the sound well. It could be easily removed.
The sound? Squarneck with biscuit, unique to say the least! Kind of like King Bennie but softer cause of the wood body. Perfect for bluesey stuff, Black Ace, etc...The pickup sounds cool through my amp, these are well known vintage single coil pickups.
$400 includes shipping in the CONUS. International, email for a quote. I would also consider trades. info@thebeansprout.com
