HONKY TONK MUSIC:
During the pre–World War II years, the music industry began to refer to honky tonk music being played from Texas and Oklahoma to the West Coast as hillbilly music. More recently, the term has come to refer to the primary sound in country music, developing in Nashville as Western swing became accepted there. Originally, it featured the guitar, fiddle, string bass, and steel guitar(imported from Hawaiian folk music). The vocals were originally rough and nasal, as exemplified by singer-songwriters Floyd Tillman and Hank Williams, but later developed a clear and sharp sound, such as that of singers George Jones and Faron Young. Lyrics tended to focus on working-class life, with frequently tragic themes of lost love, adultery, loneliness, alcoholism, and self-pity.
RON ROGERS & THE WAILING WIND:
Texas-bred singer-songwriter-guitarist Ron Rogers knows how to tell a story. The 11 Rogers-penned songs on Country & Eastern, the new release featuring his band, the Wailing Wind, are testaments to the hard life, injustice, the dark side, and tough living, set to a raw and edgy roots/Americana soundtrack.
Rogers is known for his inspired lyricism and the ability to capture strong moods and emotions in the studio. “With this band,” says Roger, “I can easily capture the stuff that’s in my head. Most of these cuts were done in one take, once we nailed the groove. ”
Rogers’ band is comprised of some of Portland’s finest – Dave Grafe on pedal steel guitar, Don Campbell on bass and vocals, and drummer Chris Bond. Each is a musical journeyman in his own right who fits seamlessly with Rogers’ music.
The CD, Rogers’ fifth, runs the gamut from Texas-style rock (Alabama Chrome, Cathouse on the Moon), aching ballads (Hang Tough, Underneath the Wheels, I’ll Tell You Why), and even the tongue-in-cheek and light-hearted (We Both Love Her & We Both Hate Me). All feature Rogers’ astute storytelling, strong vocals and guitar, and the moan of Grafe’s pedal steel guitar. The band is anchored by the rock-solid back beat of Bond and Campbell.
STEADY BOYS:
Start with some Country and good ol’ Honky Tonk, toss in a little Cajun spice then add some sweet love songs and you have Steady Boys. New to the Portland scene, this 7-piece aggregate of musicians will have your foot stompin’, your face grinnin’ and your heart poundin’.
Steady Boys is made up of three members of Portland’s premiere Cajun band; Tim Shaughnessy on bass, Lefty Head on fiddle/mandolin, and Rick Obbink on accordion. They are joined by newcomers Jennifer Smieja on vocals, Tia Regan on banjo, and Julia Shaughnessy on percussion. Veteran drummer Jim Wolfe holds them all together on Cajon.
Covering favorites by: Hank Williams, Lefty Frizzell, Lucinda Williams, Abigail Washburn, Loretta Lynn, Little Walter, Joan Osbourne, Gnarls Barkley and more....
