On a Sierra, how do you keep the brass pull rod tuning nuts from turning on the rod? If the nut turns on the rod, the rod will not turn and you cannot tune the pull.

Several of mine are loose.

No problem clockwise as that tightness the nut until it jams, then the rod would turn. But counter clockwise, if the nut is loose, it will just back off the rod.

Hit it with a hammer on one side, to slightly deform it?
Tighten until it jams, then some more? (but don't strip, probably wont work for long.)
Use thread lock. Permanent or removable?
With permanent, how to take apart if you need to, soften adhesive with a torch?

I made some longer pull rods for an S14 about a year ago. I robbed the brass ends from the too short rods to put on the new ones. They were tough, but unscrewed with a little coaxing back and forth twisting motion. I had the rods held in a vise of course.

I would say if there's no chance you'll ever need to take them off, use the red Loctite permanent stuff. Your heating idea would likely work in any event.

I used the blue stuff on mine, but you must be sure and give it enough time to set up. Worked fine after that.

You might check with Tom Baker at Sierra to see what original adhesive was used.

Jerry, thanks.

Anyone know what they are called. I would think they are some type of blind nut but nothing comes up on McMaster Carr, only acorn nuts, but they are rounded on top. I would like to have a few spares and make a few rods.

I am redoing the setup and will probably buy some ready made pull rods,but looking things over I can see I will need some more and the $ can add up fast, don't want to shorten the unused long ones, might want to go back to how it was setup when I got it.

Try searching "threaded standoffs" at Mcmaster. I doubt they'll have blind ones, unpess you get one with a male thread one end and it cut off. If I recall correctly the rods have a 6-32 thread on the nut end.

To keep them from spinning, take 'em apart, clean them to get rid of old loctite or any oil, then put 'em back together with some permanent Loctite.

I had a parts supplier tell me a few years ago they are called a "closed-end stand-off". Never could find a supplier for them other than Sierra.
Jerry Overstreet's solution (loctite) works, and heat form a soldering iron will loosen them.

Or you could use "Ny-Loks" ( nuts with nylon insert). You can find them at any hardware or auto parts stores. Winking
