Somebody jogged my memory this morning on facebook with a clip of Bruce Bouton playing steel with Ricky Skaggs and saying that it was Hank DeVito...
The clip showed Bruce (with a big bushy moustache)playing his black Emmons and that transported me back to 1980, when Bruce came through St. Louis with Lacy J. Dalton.

The Dalton Gang pulled up to the Chase Park Plaza to play some shows, and while they were checking in, somebody stole their cube van loaded with all their equipment. Later that day, somebody called me and offered to sell me an "Emmons for $500"...So I went over and looked at it, and knew immediately whose it was due to the news coverage.

Well this fellow that called me had a "gangster" sort of reputation, so I was a little scared to rat on him outright (I was about 19 at the time). So I called Scotty and told him what was going on. He called the police and told them about my tip without getting my name involved...

So they got their stuff back, I got a front row table at the Chase shows, and Bruce gave me a gig with the house band at the Chase...

I played with those guys for a couple of weeks, and it was the Thursday before the steel convention when I looked up from the bandstand and who comes walking into the bar but Scotty, Buddy, Doug J., Jeff Newman, Mitsuo Fuji, et. al...They walk in and sit down at the table right in front of me and start messing with my head. They would point at me and lean over to each other and whisper stuff...

By the time that tune was over, I got off the stage and went and sat down at the table. We had a good laugh and then those guys finished out the night taking turns playing my steel...Quite an education, and the first and only time I have ever been hugged and kissed by a fellow steel player...

Here's a link to a newspaper article from back in the day...

I don't remember all the details about getting the equipment back for Lacy J. Dalton and especially Bruce's steel guitar. I didn't just call the police at that time as I didn't know where the van had been taken to. But I did have friends and called a couple of them and that was when I knew the address to send the police to. The rest is history and I believe everyone got their equipment back. I am writing a bio book and stories like this will spread out all through it. It will be about the steel guitar and the people that play them and the experiences Mary and I have had since 1968. The things I will write about are the expeiences that WE WERE THERE. I won't repeat any stories I have heard about the players because I wasn't there. I have help. Maybe some of you will remember the newsletter I put out for 18 years. SGI. Short for Steel Guitar International. I had intended to use the name Missouri Steel Guitar Association but the thought of some confusion it might have with other Associations I thought of International Steel Guitar. When I suggested that name to Jerry Byrd he immediately came up with "Why not call it Steel Guitar International". So it was Jerry that came up with title. Scotty

This is indeed exciting news, that Scotty is writing a memoir. I hope there'll be plenty of photos, too. Put me down for an autographed copy or two, Scotty!

Frank, - I have about 20 pages weritten on my bio book. That was 3 years ago! I think I could write it one week. I wrote the New Sho Bud Pedal Steel Guitar Course in one week....Finding pictures could be a problem as I have over 14,000 to look through. Don't dispair, I have most of my trips in a seperate place than with the convention photos. Here is what I am facing at this time.

INTERNATIONAL STEEL GUITAR CONVENTION
Selecting the players for the Convention
Then notify the players of their time slots
Getting their rooms at the Millennium Hotel
Notifying all the distributor
Writing a new book for Mel Bay "Killer Techniques" C6
Writing a new book for Mel Bay "Killer Techniques" E9
Working at Scotty's Music a few hours a day.

I need more hours in the day! Scotty
