| I had to turn my guitar upside down to get the ball out of the changer after a string break. Is there a more dignified way to do this? |

Gary, you might try a strip of foam like this
 If you break a string the foam will hold the ball end in place and you can remove it with your fingers or needle nose pliers. also ,I can not detect any change in the tone of the guitar with this in place. Dale |

Yes. I use to have John Houseman do it for me, but he has passed on. Perhaps you could have James Lipton turn your guitar upside down. 
Getting serious, though, I like the sponge strip idea for keeping the balls out of there in the first place!  |

The foam insert is the best idea, but if you haven't done it yet, you can use some variation of this $2 pick set to retrieve ball ends sometimes.
Works well for me most of the time. I keep a couple sets around for various uses working on steel guitars in the shop.
Rarely have one at the gig though when one breaks.

i know a steeler who runs thread through each ball end who then hang over the changer
when a string breaks ( usually at the changer ) he pulls the thread to get the ball end out
i don't have a dignified way but i sure as heck, get it out before i go any further |
