got a song in mind Billy ?
James Brown for instance, always asks Maceo (the tenor sax) if he can take it to the bridge
other band leaders operate differently |

I guess what I am asking is the bridge mostly improvised? Any song....Wild Side of Life...a Way to survive...etc |

the bridge is usually written out like the rest of the tune
it is rarely improvised
as far as i can tell there is no bridge on " way to survive "
only verses, chorus & solos
same w: " Wild side of Life "
a bridge is a different part that's added on to the standard set up : verse, chorus, & solo
let's take " Lovesick blues " since it does have a bridge to it
it begins at 1:08
no Chorus & no Solos tho'

LOVESICK BLUES
Recorded by Hank Williams, Sr.
Words and music by Irving Mills and Cliff Friend
CAPO: 3rd FRET KEY: F PLAY: D
THIS IS THE VERSE
I got a [D] feelin' called the blu-ues, oh, Lawd
Since my baby said good-[A7] bye
And I don't know what I'll do-oo-oo
All I do is sit and [D] [P] sigh-igh, oh, Lawd
That [D7] last long [G] day she said good-[G7] bye
Well [D] Lawd I thought I would [B7] cry
She'll [E7] do me, she'll do you, she's got that kind of lovin'
[A7] Lawd, I love to hear her when she calls me
Sweet [D] [P] dad-ad-ad-dy, [D] such a beautiful [A7] dream
I hate to think it all o-o-ver
I've lost my heart it [F#] seems
I've grown [D7] so [G] used to you some-[G7] how
Well, I'm [D] nobody's sugar-[B7] daddy now
And I'm [E7] lo-on-lonesome [A7]
I got the Lovesick [D] Blu-ues.
THIS IS THE BRIDGE
Well, I'm in [F#] love, I'm in love, with a [Bm] beautiful gal
[F#] That's what's the matter with [Bm] me
Well, I'm in [F#] love, I'm in love, with a [Bm] beautiful gal
But [E7] she don't care about [A7] me
Lawd, I tried and I tried, to keep her satisfied
But she [D7] just wouldn't stay
So [E7] now that she is lea-eav-in'
This is all I can [A7] say.
i'm sure others will jump on in & help you understand what's particular about the bridge compared to verses, choruses & solos |

Thanks for that CrowBear. Let me say it this way...When you are playing a solo and the band takes the break and you come back with the next verse which goes kinda off the wall then play a tag or another verse. Technically that probably is not a bridge. But seems like all the good players are showing thier chops. |

as to really understand what you're lookin' for Billy, i need an example to relate
here's an example of how a tune is structured :
Intro
Verse 1
Chorus
Verse 2
Chorus
Solo
Bridge
Option : Intro again
Verse 3
Chorus
Chorus &/or solo to end |
