Although Doc's pronosis from the surgery looked good at the beginning things have taken a turn for the worse. His family has been called to his bedside for Doc's final journey. He was an icon among acoustic guitar players, and I'll miss him. Of all the people I've talked to who have worked with Doc, they say a finer gentlemen never walked the earth. God's speed on you new journey Mr. Watson. May you liven up the Heavenly band.

(Wrong thread, Michael. The following is more up-to-date than your information and distressingly premature obit.)

From the Folklore Productions (Doc's management) website:

May 27, 2012 / 4:30 PM PDT:

Doc had a difficult day, but seems to have pulled through OK. His condition is now pretty much where it was when the day began. He remains in critical condition.

The family, while understanding and appreciating interest from Docโ€™s friends and well-wishers, would appreciate privacy during this trying time.

My information came from Caroline Wright at IBMA via Harry Moore of The Seldom Heard program. It was given to us at 7:30 EDT this evening which should make it 5:30 PDT. Your message from Folklore Productions is the same one I received yesterday. Hopefully, my info is wrong.

Unfortunately, Michael is correct, Doc's family has indeed been called in. The surgery to repair his damaged colon was at first deemed successful (it resulted in the complete removal), but he has not been upgraded from critical condition as of yet, and remains in ICU. He needs all the good thoughts and prayers we can send him and his family at this time.

No matter what the reports say, it looks like it is coming to an end and that is really sad news. Doc is an icon and did so much to introduce young kids to the traditions of American Music. We are about to lose another legend.

God Speed, Doc.

I find it rather sad that the Nashville Tennessean newspaper which usually has something about country music entertainers, i.e. Earl Scruggs, Douglas Dillard, has said little or nothing about Doc or his condition. Hmmmmm.

I would guess the Tennessean is respecting the family's request for privacy at this time. Nothing sad about that.
