A friend of a friend is selling this guitar. I'm told it is in very good condition, with a "small crack" in the wood between the 2nd and 3rd tuners, no legs, and no bridge cover, with the original case.
Is $800 a fair price?

Also, I've never owned, or played a Fender lap steel. Whoa! Whoa! Whoa!
Is the Deluxe 8 good for playing with a fair amount of distortion, for rock, blues,etc...?

I thank you for any info you guys mave have.

Steve, I've had a couple of these. They can be good guitars, sometimes they are a little weak above the 17th fret--I think it has to do with the density (or lack of) of the bridge. But they sound really nice clean and dirty. It's nice to mess with the blend pot--I think you'll appreciate some of the nice glassiness you can get with these.

$800 is a fair price for one with legs--without legs I would stay around $600, maybe $700. Legs aren't cheap.

Since none of my guitars have cracks or broken or missing pieces.......I'd have to say that this guitar is about $300 more than I'd ever care to pay for it.

I base this on the condition of my four-neck BIGSBY,
my dozen Bakelite Ric's, My Sho-Bud Fry pan, Ric Frypan, Trotmore, Excel and EMMONS......all of which are quite old by today's standards.......

For the kind of musical sounds you mentioned, I'd have to agree it would likely be quite suited to that stuff......

Sorry for the negative comments but that's how I see it. Buying a guitar that's not up to snuff or damaged in some way.....is about as difficult to get rid of as a general aviation airplane can be.

With the small crack and lack of legs I would think that $500 is a fair price. With the tuning pan secured at the top and at the bottom I don't think that a small crack between the 2nd and 3rd tuners would effect the playability (although it would effect the price.)

I've gotten some great deals on steels with small cracks or other defects. I like to collect guitars and animals that no one else wants. (The animal part of that statement is not true.)

Not sure if any of these folks have tried to buy a Deluxe 8 recently... $800 is entirely fair. The case on that guitar is worth $300; with legs ($200) and a cover ($50) this is a $1200 guitar. Legs and cover are on eBay right now, btw... that might be an education, type 'stringmaster' into ebay search. The tuners and pan will bring $100, the pickups about $80 each, the coverplate will bring at least $50, the controls another $50... the body and fretboard (cracked or not) will bring another $150. Don't forget the leg sockets.

In my opinion the Stringnaster pickup configuration is truly ideal for distortion, the neck position p/u gives you more low end growl.
That was my main reason for starting off with a Deluxe 6, then to an 8, now Im playing 24.5" scale Stringmasters which offer a bit more in the tone department, but still the blend pot on either scale offers a lot more tonal versatility.
Plus with the blend pot full on the two single coils are a humbucker, which helps with higher gain setups.

IMO the steel guitar pricing here at SGF is usually very reasonable. Here are the last five Deluxe 8 steels that came up in a site search with prices ranging from $600 to $950.

Check out the pictures- the steels sold on this forum are generally in really good shape (when it isn't the price is usually adjusted accordingly.) eBay and craigslist have a lot of steels that were recently found in basements and attics- I think that most of the steels sold here have been played extensively and treated with respect.

P.S. I think if any member was to part out a steel that they bought on the forum in good condition they would be run out of town on a rail. Whoa!

I would pay $600 for that in a heartbeat.
