I got a call from Dick Brandt from PA yesterday and he suggested that I should look into putting together a steel jam in NJ and invite all the players in the surrounding areas. I think it's a really good idea, but I don't really know how to get this organized. He said Warren Slavin used to organize a shindig in a hotel room (I'm assuming he meant a conference room).
If anyone has any advice as how to best proceed with this, or if you even have an interest in attending, please chime in--I'd love to hear your thoughts.
Dick, if you read this, give me a call back. I can't reach you at the number I have for you. _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |

Mike,
Try The American Legion, VFW, or a local community center. |

Does Dick read this forum? I had no idea.
Unless I am mistaken, I organized the last jam, and that was in 1994! Warren Slavin, Don Sweatman, and some other local steelers organized the only one before that a year earlier. We used hotels, and it was a very expensive proposition. It was more a convention than a jam, and for the few who turned up, it was a losing proposition at that.
The one year that I was involved it was quite an event. We had Doug Smith, Leonard T. Zinn, Warren Slavin, Don Sweatman, a fellow from England (why can't I remember his name?), J.T. Gallagher... I think we definitely need a reunion.
If you are chatting or emailing Dick, remember him to me. (He was my entré into the amazing world of Kayton Roberts.) And do let him know what I am up for organizing or whatever is needed - except for footing the bill. (I used to be a professional conference planner. I just hope this doesn't turn into a full-blown "conference.")

Hi Mike,
I am willing to help and have two suggestions for venues:
One is right here in my backyard, so to speak. The West Trenton Ballroom is a large room (seats maybe 250 people) attached to our local fire company. It's about a mile from I-95 and a mile from the NJ/PA border. (I can easily check on the costs.)
The second is a church related meeting hall in Somerset, NJ, just off I-287, south of the junction with US 22. (I can check that one out too.)

Two more possible venues:
The Ukulele HOF held two festivals in North Jersey many years ago. One was held in the Women's Club of Upper Montclair building in Montclair, NJ. The other was held in a community hall in Nutley, NJ.
Maybe I can find out more information. _________________ 1974 Marlen S-12 1968 Tele 1969 Martin D-35H |

I know the Women's Club in Montclair well--I've played there many times. I am also right near Somerset, so I know exactly what you are talking about. I imagine this is a Herculean task that would require a lot of planning. I'm definitely going to think about it--maybe shoot for something smaller scale to start with.
Bill, I will tell Dick when I speak to him again. Some of these guys just call you up out of the blue every few years--it's really great. How is Warren Slavin doing? _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |

Hey, Mike--
Your timing is excellent. A great guy who runs a steel jam out of his shop in eastern PA is holding his last get-together this month, then moving out of the area. It's sad to see him go.
Anyway, there are some eastern PA steelers, like me, who would be interested in your jam. Please keep us posted.
Thanks.

This sounds good, I'll be watching. The post brought back memories of when I had a few steel jams in my living room many years ago. My wife went out for the day and we moved some of the furniture, LOL.

You can never get enough steel playing. |

the club house on the lake where i live, mt kemble lake in harding nj, could be used for free (providing lake members could attend for free) and can hold 125 attendees.
i would expect less than 30 lakers would attend.
there are 2 hotels less than 4 miles away.

if you all want to pursue this option i will need to hone in on a date so i can can confirm its availability and then reserve it
maybe someone could set up a poll for picking a month, a week etc |

Hey Ed, that sounds great. If anyone is up for organizing it, I would gladly step aside--I have a lot on my plate at this moment but I'd love to take part.
Would people prefer playing with live musicians or BIAB? I have never used BIAB, personally, but I could see the advantages it might offer. I prefer musicians--I could probably round up a few. _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |

ok my offer is on the table
everyone else is going to have to get involved in the heavy lifting
1. deciding if the venue is central enough (for mike its a short hop up 287 to exit 30)
2. nailing down a date (if its summer bring your swim suit)
3. rounding up players for a band etc |

OK, then. I definitely have a great guitarist who lives in the area. I play, too. Could easily find a bassist.
I think June would be a good time, but I am pretty booked up on weekends in June. I'll check my schedule for sure.
Ed, I have played the Old Mill In countless times. I know that area well. That is a good location for everyone--those coming from PA have Rt. 78; from the north there's 287. I think it sounds good.
I know Bud Angelotti wanted to get something going down in his neck of the woods, too. (Lawrenceville). _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |

So Mike, looks like you have lots of interest which is a good thing. A little clarification is needed, at least to my simple, undeveloped aptitude. Is this event going to be a show or a jam with many pickers set up waiting their turn to play? If in fact this is a jam where many players are set up, I'd like to be situated next to Cohen so I can detune his guitar just before his turn. Is your selected facility large enough to handle a large turn out? Bottom feeders like me may choose to play at a segregated jam circle, ya know, hacks in training? Other wise, J C will be tuning throughout the entire event ![Laughing](images/smiles/icon_lol.gif) _________________ Assorted gear and a set of hands...

when I had my steel jams years ago, George Wixon came down from Ct. with his BIAB set up and it was great. Maybe someone closer has a set-up.
