I just got my hands on a new GoldTone Beard 8-string dobro and so far I'm loving it.
It's also my first foray into 8-string tuning, which I can already tell is going to be quite an adventure. Frustrating, for sure, but I'm excited about all the new possibilities...

As mentioned in another thread, my plan was to tune it (high to low):
D-A-F#-E-D-C-A-D
I love the one-tone intervals in the middle there, which make for so much improvising...

But, for fun I tried tuning the E up to an F, for easy access to a nice fat D-minor chord...
What would that tuning be called? (D-A-F#-F-D-C-A-D)
I think I like the versatility of the first tuning better, but it's an interesting variation.

Any tips for finding minor chords using the DAF#EDCAD? I've obviously got easy access to the ACE at the bottom, but I love slants and haven't had a chance to wrap my head around all the new options...

thanks!

I believe that your tuning has the same intervals as Jerry Byrd's E9 tuned down to D.

Yes, I believe the first tuning (D-A-F#-E-D-C-A-D ) is indeed the same as Jerry Byrd's... I got the idea from our own Mike Neer!

On that note, I've read that Jerry used this tuning on his Admirable Byrd album. What better way to get inside it and learn some applicable slants than to listen to that, eh?

Can anyone direct me to where I could buy the album online? (Preferrably as a direct download...) I'm not having much luck!

thanks.
