Maple is a species, whereas "curly" and "birds-eye" are merely characteristics (defects) often found in the wood of the sugar maple tree (whose wood is termed by some as"hard rock maple"). You never know what kind of figure you're going to have until you cut up the log. Unlike "tiger oak", which is made from ordinary oak using a specific lumber cutting process, you cannot introduce curls, flames, and birds-eyes into a log by cutting. They're either there, or they're not.
Anyhow, to answer your question, most older pedal steels (except Fenders) were made with maple. It was plentiful, relatively hard without being too heavy, and reasonably priced. It also often had attractive figuring or defects which made the wood look more fancy. |
