I've been using a "rail" style steel since I got into this (4 months ago). I think I'd like to give the bullet style a go. I'm playing a 6-string lap - the Jersey Lightning. I'm not sure what size is best, or what other features to look for (recessed end?). Also, I'm a cheapskate, FYI. Razz

[I'm sure this questions been answered a zillion times, but my search came up dry.]

This one will get you going.

For 6 string, I like the Jerry Byrd Dunlop model 918.
It's cheap at about $20 and works good for me. Not too light or too heavy.
Not much of an indent on the end but has never bothered me with reverse slants.
I like it well enough, I bought a spare just in case.

I'm partial to the Tribotone bar but I also like my John Pearce Thermocryonic.

So far this is in the front running, if for no other reason than I can have it in my hands by lunch time (I work about 10 minutes from Elderly). The cost is right too.

Thnaks, guys! keep the suggestions coming...

It would be financially disasterous for me to work or live that close to Elderly! I like having them safely at an unvisitable distance from me!!

I worked there during college (70's/80's). I never found myself burdened with extra money. Without that store and the community of people around it, I wouldn't play music today.

Oh, and I love my Tribotone bars!

I ended up getting that Broz-o-phonic from Elderly. I also changed my strings from roundwound to semi-flats last night. WHOA! what a difference! Between the two changes, the thing just plays like butter now. The steel just floats along the strings. I hardly even have to thing about where it's going and it goes there. It's like a Ouija board. Shocked

Also, playing up high on the neck is so much easier than with the SP bar. With the SP, it's unnatural to angle it away from parallel with my fingers, but with the bullet, it's pretty smooth and effortless to slide around from reverse to straight to forward slants, etc.

After one evening of playing around, I'm totally sold. Definitely worth $21.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

The Stevens style bar is essentially a steel with training wheels. Laughing
