The phrase “steel guitar” can mean different things to music fans. It’s not all about Hawaiian or country, but also folk, pop, jazz and even rock 'n' roll, where pedal, slide, lap and other steel types have created hits.

Non-profit KPTZ Radio Port Townsend is including all of those genres and more in a pair of two-hour programs hosted by John Sailer and Barney Burke. The programs run from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 27 and Friday, May 4 on KPTZ 91.9 FM (the broadcast can be streamed at kptz.org). “Barney’s Friday Night Blues” program follows from 8 to 10 p.m. on both evenings.

Sailer and Burke have narrowed the play list down to about 30 tracks for each of the two programs. It includes early tunes that made steel guitar popular in Hawaiian and country music, as well as tunes that broadened its appeal.

Among the rock tunes that made the cut for the program is a 1970 hit featuring Jerry Garcia on pedal steel, and a live Dire Straits recording featuring Paul Franklin. Also in the lineup are classics by Hank Williams, Santo & Johnny, Judy Collins, Gary Stewart, Jimmie Tarlton, Nanci Griffith, Bob Dylan, Alan Jackson, Dawn Sears, Rick Nelson, Johnny Bush and Linda Ronstadt.

Many of the steel players being featured are in the Steel Guitar Hall of Fame, including Jimmy Day, Pete Drake, Buddy Emmons, Santo Farina, Sol Hoopii, “Sneaky” Pete Kleinow, Ralph Mooney, Alvino Rey, Dewitt "Scotty" Scott, Lloyd Green, Tom Brumley, Weldon Myrick, and Speedy West.

By special permission, the program includes some live recordings of performances at the International Steel Guitar Convention in St. Louis that aren’t available commercially. Other recordings date from 1934 to 2011.

This is a first for me and is meant for a general audience. We are trying to present the wonders of STEEL to people who might not otherwise notice. If you listen, your presence will be appreciated. Any suggestions or criticisms will be appreciated even more. We will try to correct any mistakes.

We are still trying to identify some steel music:
