I’ll cut right to the chase. I love this cd. I think it might just possibly be the single best non-traditional, non-country steel guitar recording ever made. I reviewed it for SGW when it was first released and loved it then, but then I put it away and forgot about it, and only recently rediscovered it.
The music is Absolutely lovely. Actually though, it's misleading to call this a steel guitar CD. It's not about the steel guitar, It's about music. The steel guitar is only a vehicle. If you can categorize the music you’d have to call it "Soft Jazz".
Selfe, who composed all the music on the CD, uses the steel guitar and all it's permutations, (dobro, pedabro, MIDI steel, E-bowed pedal steel, etc.) to create a gorgeous tapestry of sounds. Toward this end he is assisted by guitarists Keith Allen, Saxophonist Bruce Unsworth, Bassist Robin Sylvester, and drummers John Hanes and Chris Sandoval. Together they form an ensemble that has created some of the prettiest sounds ever to come out of the meeting of bar and strings.
This is as good as it can possibly get. Thumbs up as high as I can stretch them.
The CD is available from Selfe Service Records P.O. Box 31084 San Francisco CA
