I had the chance over the week end to watch a DVD I bought a while back. Merle Haggard Live at The Staion Inn.. WOW , my hats off to Norm. This is not only a great example of some very tasteful steel playing but also a great lesson on things such as how to back a singer, volume control and overall band etiquette.Never does he overplay a song or step over another player to be heard..
Norm , I just say " Your The Man"

Merle's "Live at Billy Bob's" CD is a textbook on what a country band should sound like and Norm's playing and tone is superb.

Clyde, I agree with you, and I want you to know there are actually 2 Live at BB's CDs. First is subtitled "Motorcycle Cowboy" and second is called "Old Country Singer". There is also a DVD of at least one of those.

I 100% agree David, Norm is just plain cool. What I really like is that he doesn't overplay, he's just professional in every way.

and he makes it all sound so simple....til you try to emulate it. merle, norm and the strangers all incorporate a minimalst swing/jazz element that is just so cool. i keep saying i'm gonna learn that lick...hopefully some day i will.

edited to add that i know it when i hear it, but can't find it when i look for it!

That's why Haggard's recordings have always sounded great. He has mainly used his road band and they know when not to play. Norm has been a master of the understated steel parts that fit the song 100%.

That is why he has been a Stranger for all of these years. Smile
