I'm sorry I didn't get a picture of it or the brand but I was in my local GC yesterday and right up front they had a six string steel set up which was shaped like a surfboard. It also had three adjustable legs on it so it could be played standing up.....Anyone know anything about these guitars? Seem like it might be a cool item and the price wasn't that much if I remember. I might go down there today a get a picture of it......JH in VA. _________________ Don't matter who's in Austin (or anywhere else) Ralph Mooney is still the king!!! |

These "Surf Board Guitars" are also available at Elderly Instruments for about $250.
They are manufactured in China. |

We had one in our store for a couple of weeks (full disclosure: I'm the guitar tech at the Indianapolis GC).
The bridge was pretty nifty - not your typical strat-style bridge like on some other steels. The specs on Elderly say it's a 22.75" scale, but it felt longer to me - none of my slants seemed to be in the right places. It could have just been me, though.
The pickup sounded all right to me, but I'm spoiled by old Fender and Rickenbacher pickups, which are pretty high standards to live up to.
All in all, a nice idea. The surfboard shape is pretty cool-looking. |

I played one at NAMM. It was uncomfortable to play, coundn't roll on the high strings with the tone bar. Sound was average, nothing special. Just a gimmick and not worth the money IMHO. _________________ 1958 D8 Stringmaster, 1958 T8 Stringmaster, 1955 Q8 Stringmaster (in basket), 1949 Gibson BR9, 1953 Silvertone, 1957 Harmony H4 (yeah the cool black pearloid one), 1947 National Princess, 1969 Shobud S10 3X1 |

I just came home from GC with one of these. I got it for $199 plus tax on a deal which came to $208 and change. If nothing else, it's a good conversation piece. It also has a couple of strap buttons so you can hang it on you like a Dobro, play standing up with the included three legs, or lay it on your lap. The pickup is fairly decent and I might play it out a time or two this coming week....JH in Va. _________________ Don't matter who's in Austin (or anywhere else) Ralph Mooney is still the king!!! |
