I'm selling an Elektra copy of the Gibson Howard Roberts guitar. I've dated this to 1975/1976 model. The serial # is shown in pic on back of headstock. From what I learned, this is all original with gold plated keys, tailpiece, and mini humbucker pickup. Pics shows where some of gold plating has worn. Bridge is wooden with flower inlays. Neck and body has white binding which has yellowed due to age. Guitar plays great, sounds great, and looks fine. The pickguard is missing, but can be replaced. Case is well worn but does protect guitar. This is a rare and truly unique guitar. Selling because I need money, therefore I'm not interested in trades. Asking $850.00 Thanks for looking. Contact me with any questions.BL

More pics are coming. You'll want to see them. IMHO, they show how unique guitar is, especially for it's age. Jack, to be honest I never noticed it before, but I THINK the picture may make it look more slanted than it is. However, I will check it out, and c orrect any problem. I know for certain it chords out true up and doen the neck. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. Re: the angled bridge
The angled or, more accurately, offset bridge is entirely normal and correct. For inquiring minds, here's the story on that. As most people know, The Epiphone company was bought by Gibson and production of those instruments was shifted to Kalamazoo. As a result, more and more of the line's guitars took on Gibson features and hardware including, in this case, their archtop bridges.
Now, before the total changeover to the use of the metal Tuneamatic the wooden archtop bridges had their support posts OFFSET in the base to allow for better intonation. Later, and again especially for all Tuneamatic bridges, there was no offset.
OK, how does that relate to this Electra model? Well, the guitar is a knockoff of the Gibson/Epiphone HR model, but uses the older, wooden style of offset bridge. And there you have it. Oh, one more point. The Electra's bridge has the two inlays on it which was only really seen on upper-end archtop bridges. I like the looks of it on this HR.
I collect archtop guitars. I have an original Epiphone and a later Gibson Howard Roberts. Killer, simply great guitars. Frankly, I have |

Another comment on the angled bridge. I had to angle the bridge on my 61 Gretsch Chet Atkins for proper intonation. |

Hey guys, thanks for the info. I've read alot about the HR guitar on Epi's, Elektras and other copies but it's great to learn something new. I purchased guitar because of it's great look, the fact it was vintage, and as a collector. It plays fine and sounds good with a touch of nostalgia. BTW, Eric, as a collector, where is the best place for me to find a pickguard. I've found several makers of pickguard on the internet but thought you may have some insight. Thanks BL _________________ MCI D10,Evans amps,Fender Twin,Sessions 500,Peavey amps, Fender guitars,Gibson guitars,G & L guitars,Taylor/Takamine/Gibson acoustics,Vintage guitars,DD 3,Boss pedals, Pro Fex,Shure/Carvin Sound Equipment |

Bobby,
Original pick guards for older guitars are catch-as-catch-can. I've certainly had guitars that have gone years without a guard until I happen across an original either online, tucked away in the spare parts drawer at a music store or at a guitar show.
Sometimes I have a new guard made. A trick I've learned is to find a similar guitar for sale online. Then email the owner and ask him if he wouldn't mind making a tracing of the guitar's pickguard on paper and then mailing it to you. Often I'll offer them $10 for their time and trouble in doing that. I've had good luck with that and, truthfully, most people are only too happy to oblige. Then I send the tracing to a custom pickguard maker. That can get pricey.
Lately, though, I've gotten less concerned about the lack of a pickguard on some, but not all, guitars that I buy. Depends on the guitar.
All that being said, I gotta be straightforward and tell you that the chances of finding an originalickguard for your Electra HR are pretty slim. Actually I think the guitar looks good without one. |
