My question is about Leroy Troy's singing on the Marty Stuart show. His banjo playing is superb and his band, The Tennessee Majia Jug band, is great. However his singing is atrocious. Is he really trying to sing like that and what is he trying to imitate if anything?

When he comes on, I turn Marty off for a few minutes. I agree with you.

I excuse his singing because I believe he is supposed to be the comedy relief on the show.

Leroy Troy is one of the last (and the best IMO) purveyors of the old time Hillbilly minstrel style, ala Uncle Dave Macon. He's keeping traditional Country music alive. He's obviously not trying to be a crooner, he's an entertainer. Something also that most of todays crop of upstarts just do not get.

No love for Leroy Troy? Come on now! I guess y'all don't like Uncle Dave Macon, or Rod Brasfield, Minnie Pearl, Stringbean, Speck Rhodes, Harold Morrison, Homer & Jethro? Leroy Troy is following a long tradition. I enjoy his contribution to the show every week.

If not aware of the folks I mention, take a look at their work. It might help you to appreciate the talent of the ole Sultan of Goodlettsville!

Now that you mention it, I find Leroy Troy's singing to be very similar to Speck Rhodes or Minnie Pearl. The other individuals you mention don't seem to me to have the exaggarated styles of Leroy, and some (Stirngbean, Morrison, Homer and Jethro) are excellent vocalists. I particularly like the vocals and music of Grandpaw Jones. Leroy to me just seems to be trying to sing badly, something I find in none of the people you mention except for Speck and Minnie.

Interestingly, I have talked with Speck Rhodes, he lived across from my aunt and some friends of my parents in Memphis TN. Speck's brother and band leader was Slim Rhodes who went to church with my parents, I remember him well but I never heard him sing, he had a TV show and sang in local schools, to the best of my knowledge he would have never even gone in an establishment where there was drinking or dancing, didn't believe in that kind of thing.

The damn yankees seem to be the ones who don't get it. I enjoy it, reminds me of when I was a kid watching Hee Haw.

I liked his version of "Ghost Chickens In The Sky". Hillarious. I'll admit, I usually get up and take my pee break when he comes on. But sometimes he's entertaining. Also has occasional heavy's playing with him. His prime move is opening his eyes real wide, then squinting and pursing his lips. He uses that one alot. Marty loves him.

Nope, nope, nope, time for a channel change when this guy comes on or the silly Tennesse Mafia Jug Band. Really? Who the heck is the talent coordinator for that show? There I am enjoying some fine country telecasters and country music and this this Bozo comes on!
Oh well, to each his own.

I like the regulars on Marty's show and my favorite part is when Marty and the guys do their gospel number. Killer voices, killer blend.

I don't find any part of this show offensive..For those who keep harping to bring back traditional Country, here it is at it's best. And there is nothing better availible for the traditional music on any network...One of the most talented 4 piece bands and true formats being presented weekly..And guest being shown the respect they have earned..Marty is a great promoter..The show is a shining light coming out of a dark tunnel..Enjoy it while someone still has the great efforts and means to get it aired..

I don't think anyone has tackled my original question. Leroy's banjo playing seems to me to be exceptional and his selection of songs of great. However to my ear his singing is discordant. It seems more intended for humor and theatrical effect and does not seem to me to be harmonious with his other musical efforts. Is this the effect he is trying to achieve or am I mistaken. Thanks

Yes, he is striving for the Uncle Dave Macon old time minstrel thing, which IMO is very entertaining. I would guess he put many many hours into refining his act. Check out this vid

Darrell, your question (if in fact you were being serious) has been answered several times, with varying degrees of opinionated accuracy. Are you familiar with traditional Country and Hillbilly music? What Leroy Troy does (both instrumentally and vocally) is traditional to the core. I agree with what Joe said.
I find it amusing that so many folks on here complain about a lack of real Country music, yet when someone comes along who does just that, they don't like it. Btw, what Marty is doing is MARTY. Not hard core traditional. Marty in my opinion, is one of the few true stylists going today, but you can hardly call his style of guitar (or Kenny's for that matter) traditional. C'mon folks, quit your whinin and just enjoy it for it is..... REAL GOOD MUSIC!!!
Smile
