Greetings all,

This three weeks into learning this great instrument person is curious to see if a Vox amp would be ok with the PSG?

BTW, any steel players here in Phoenix, AZ?

The Vox amps are not voiced very well for the clean sounds that most pedal steel players seek. If you are playing a style that calls for fuzzy distortion they work rather well. If you are using it for quiet practice purposes than no need to change right away but I would never gig with one.

Most popular steel amps are designed so that the tone and fidelity remain consitent from low to high volumes. Vox amps are not know for this quality, but that is what makes them such nice 6-string electric guitar amps.

I love my Vox AC30 especially with my Rick 360 but not for steel guitar.

I used one at a rehearsal once because I was told not to bring an amp. It was not friendly to my Emmons.

Even with the treble turned down to 0 the amp was nothing but bright. No low end whatever. Also, it was barely audible as clean signal - if I wanted to get up to band volume the amp was deep into distortion.

The reverb was laughable too - not deep at all. Just more brightness that I could not dial in unless it was at 0.

That said, I did eventually get a workable sound out of it. Not the sound I wanted to have, but it was kind of cool for what it was. Crunchy bright fizziness - probably perfect for a lead guitar!

Depends what kind of music you want to play....pedal steel is an instrument, not a genre....I use solid state amps with my country band (MB-200/BB/SICA 15"), and a Matchless (Vox-based) amp with my alt-country band, where I am the lead instrument.......the matchless EL-84 tone is "tube clean" up to pretty high levels, goes into OD but more a sustain than a distortion, which sounds wonderful with pedal steel...the tone soars above the mix....true about the lack of low end, but that what the other guys are for....and it is MY tone....so decide if you want to sound like everyone else, which is fine (like my country band) or develop your own tone, in which case, play whatever you want....

I now have a renown and session 500 and MX vtx as well (Peavey) and play 5+ open mics a month building experience, playing 4 months now bringing a different amp. My Vox does a really decent job compared to the others in a good size room. I've had this amp since it came out over 10 yrs. The amp models from the fender and Vox are the only ones I use. Last night had it set on twin...black face 2-12 with some delay and a little chorus , someone mentioned it had a nice sound and it didn't sound whiny. But since I'm quite new I'm just filling in with chords and a few licks and it did sound good to me plus the Vox is half the weight as the session a have only played that out twice.
